[St Martins-in-the-Fields] St Martins in an Uproar.
[by Charles Williams]
Pubd Octr 1 1801 by S W Fores No 50 Piccadilly. Folios of Caricatures lent out for the Evening
Etching with hand-colouring, platemark 240 x 370mm (9½ x 14½"). Hole upper centre (in church railing). Stamp of S.W. Fores lower right.
Scene outside the church of St Martin-in-the-Fields, with clergymen chasing a parson out of the church, while couples on the right assail him. In 1801 Thomas Scott Smith introduced himself to the Curate of St Martins as the nephew of Lord Eldon, and acquired a position at the church. For a month he officiated at marriages, baptisms and burials, before he was discovered, found guilty of forgery and sentenced to death. Etched by Charles Williams (1797 - 1830, fl.), prolific etcher of satires from his own designs and those of other artists (especially Woodward). Almost all his plates are anonymous and little work has been done to establish for certain which prints he made. As a result Williams is little-known in comparison with contemporaries such as Rowlandson and Gillray in spite of the comparable quality of some of his work. This impression bears the 'S.W.F.' stamp of the publisher S.W. Fores, also found on impressions of Fores prints in the British Museum and the Hermitage, St Petersburg. BM Satires 9779; L.2384.

Regarded as a slum (under the title is a short description of the area's history as a liberty, with its ''dreadful privilege of sanctuary allowed to Murderers, Robbers &c &c''.), St. Martin's Le Grand was cleared to make way for Britain's first purpose-built mail office. However it was a decade after this print was published before work started on Sir Robert Smirke's building with its Grecian portico. Cum Gratia et Privilego Sac: Caes: Majestatis. Georg Balthasar Probst, excud. A.V [Augsburg, Germany, n.d., c.1740s].
Hand coloured engraving, 310 x 420mm. 12¼ x 16½".
Several figures in foreground. Vue D'Optique prints, known as the perspective views, were intended for use in an optical diagonal machine, and were highly popular in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Used with a special viewer called ''optical machines,'' ''optiques,'' or 'zograscopes', these prints were a form of entertainment. Published in Paris, Augsburg, London, etc., ca. 1750-1800, the prints were exhibited by travelling showmen in the streets throughout Europe and also were collected by those in the professional and upper classes who had the optical machines at home. Another attribute of these prints is their bright, often crude hand colouring, applied boldly so to show the tints when viewed through the lens. The prints usually have a series of colours-blue, pink and yellow are common-crossing in bands from side to side, with bright highlights often including red. These cheerful and colourful images, with their fascinating history and peculiar appearance, make for unusual and appealing eighteenth-century prints. Numbered 'Med: Folo. No: 47' lower left and '181' upper right; from a series engraved and published by Georg Balthasar Probst (1732 - 1801).

Etching with pencil signature. Plate 228 x 355mm. 9 x 14". Slight repair platemark top right.
A view along the River Thames, looking through the mist towards St Paul's Cathedral. William L. Wyllie (1851-1931) was born on July 5th 1851, in London. He attended Heatherley's art school until the age of fifteen, leaving to study at the Royal Academy Schools, where he won the Turner Medal at the age of eighteen. In the early 1870's Wyllie became an illustrator for the Graphic and also held several exhibitions at the galleries of the Fine Art Society. In 1889 he was elected an associate of the Royal Academy, where he exhibited his work in 1901. Wyllie spent much of his time at sea working for the White Star Shipping Line. He also served in the Royal Navy during WWI, painting seascapes and coastal landscapes. His etchings and watercolours showing working life on the Thames and the Medway brought him widespread popularity. Later in his life he played an important role in the restoration of the Victory. Wyllie died on the 6th April 1931 in Hampstead, and scouts from the 1st Portchester Sea Scout Troop, which he had founded, rowed his coffin across Portsmouth Harbour for his burial at Portchester Castle.
