He left school at 14 to work in a mill and then trained as an audit clerk while attending evening classes at Blackburn School of Arts and Crafts, where he passed the Board of Education's drawing examination in 1930, the year he was appointed part-time teacher at Blackburn. Determination gained him entry to the Royal College of Art's engraving school from 1931 to 1934, where he excelled, under teachers Malcolm Osborne and Robert Austin. He was a Rome Scholar in Engraving in 1934 attending the British School in Rome from 1934 to 1937. Rome was a favourite subject, later replaced by Venice. Printed by C. Hullmendel.
Stipple with very large margins. India paper, laid on Album sheet. Sheet size: 550 x 380mm (21¾ x 15").
The manor of Worlingham was purchased by Robert Sparrow, the elder, on June 23rd, 1755. He arrived as a wealthy property owner from Kettleburgh where the family had resided as landowners since the 17th century. Sparrow the elder became connected with the area of Lowestoft through a commercial interest in 'fish houses' and owned a 'summer property', called Cliff Cottage, sited at the northern edge of the town. Cliff Cottage was probably an artisan's house, which was gentrified by Robert Sparrow II at the turn of the 18th century. By the end of the 19th century the building, considerably modified and enlarged, became known locally as 'Sparrows Nest'. NPG: D22419.

Specific Gravities. Specific Gravity, or weight, is the measure of force with which matter, in its various forms, falles, when unsustained, towards the earth's centre. It is best determined by poising solids in water, and gases in air; and the relation to equal bulks of water or air, is the relative weight of an equal bulk, called the specific gravity; gravity being in this case synonymous with weight. [List of Gases, liquids and solids follows with more text:] ...If a structure of oak weighs 1,170 lbs., a similar one of exactly the same cubic contents, made of deal, would weigh only 555lbs. A bottle capable of containing 10 lbs. of water will hold 18 lbs of sulphuric acid, the latter being nearly twice as heave as the former.

A Speech, Made To Kinge James, At His Comeinge To Hoghton Tower, By Two conceaved to be the Household Gods. July, 1617. [n.d., c.1820.]
Printed broadside, entirely letterpress, in decorative border. Sheet 315 x 200mm. Glued to scrap sheet, horizontal and vertical centre creases where previously folded.
A gushing speech of welcome to King James I by the household gods of Hoghton Tower. Hoghton is a fortified manor house to the east of Preston in Lancashire. It has been the ancestral home of the De Hoghton family since the time of William the Conqueror. Richard Hoghton earned the favour of James I, who made him a Baronet in 1611 and visited Hoghton in 1617. Sir Richard, who was hoping to convince the king to relieve him of money-losing alum mines, laid out the red carpet for James' visit - literally. Red carpeting was laid for the entire length of the half mile avenue leading to the house. The king must have been impressed by the lavish welcome, and the feasting which followed, for he did buy the mines. An amusing but unsubstantiated tale has it that at the feast in the banqueting hall given in James' honour the king was so moved by the excellent loin of beef he was served that he took his sword and knighted it 'Sir Loin', giving us the term 'sirloin'. Richard's good fortune did not last long; only a few years later he was imprisoned in Fleet Prison for debt. Richard's son, Sir Gilbert, fought for Charles I in the Civil War, and Hoghton Tower was besieged by Parliamentary troops in 1643. Eventually the defenders capitulated, but when the Roundheads entered the house the powder magazine in the tower between the two courtyards exploded with terrifying force, killing over 100 Parliamentary men. A rare and quirky broadside.

An illustration to John Gay's 'The Spell'. The character of Hobnelia stands in the clearing of a woodland, looking down at the 'unbroken paring' or peel from the apple which lies on the ground behind her. She smiles and holds her hands open, realising the peel has formed the initial of her 'true love', Luberkin. Six lines of Gay's poem 'The Spell' are inscribed below.
