Imagined view along River Thames with part of Waterloo Bridge on left, looking from Somerset House on left to the Temple on the right. Other landmarks annotated along bottom: New Church Strand (ie St. Mary-le-Strand), Surrey St., Norfolk St., St, Clement's Church, and Arundel St. Colonel (later General Sir Frederick) Trench originated the idea of the Thames Embankment, for which a bill was (unsuccessfully) presented to Parliament in 1825. Revived, work on the Embankment started in 1864, although to a different design than is shown here. Drawn by Thomas Mann Baynes, the panorama shows the riverside as it appeared in 1825, from Westminster to London Bridge, with Trench's proposed embankment running from Whitehall to Blackfriars Bridge, with the skyline of London shown correctly above; this would have been one of nine lithographic sheets.

Strollers on the terrace of Somerset House look out at the activity on the Thames, with many people boarding steam boats and a procession of ceremonial barges. On the south side of Blackfriars Bridge one of London's several shot manufactories occupies a prominent position. From 'London from the Thames' (12 plates, 1842) by William Parrott (1813-69). Like his predecessors Prout, Bonington and T.S. Boys, Parrott used the 19th century medium of lithography to turn his own designs into prints.. Lithography, which unlike other forms of printmaking in use at the time, did not require long apprenticeships, so artists who before (and after) collaborated with specialist printmakers to turn their designs into prints, were instead able to control the reproduction of their work. Artists such as Gericault, Goya and Delacroix were enthusiastic early converts to lithography.

The artist, Thomas Malton (1748-1804), taught watercolour to Thomas Girtin and Joseph Mallord William Turner. He was also skilled in aquatint, and published many of his own designs, including 'A Picturesque Tour Through the Cities of London and Westminster', one of the key topographical resources for late Georgian London from which this view comes.

He was also a war commander in the Welsh marches, and a diplomat in Ireland.

Lord Raglan, Fitzroy James Henry Somerset (1788-1855), Commander of British forces in the Crimean War who entered the army aged sixteen and lost his right arm at Waterloo. In 1854 he was appointed to command British troops against Russia in the Crimea and he secured victory at the Alma, however his lack of experience as a commander in the field was held to blame for later calamities.

Portrait of Henry Somerset, 1st Duke of Beaufort (1629 - 1700), English politician who sat in the House of Commons at various times between 1654 and 1667, when he succeeded his father as 3rd Marquess of Worcester. He was styled Lord Herbert from 1644 until 3 April 1667. The Dukedom of Beaufort was bestowed upon him by King Charles II in 1682.

Iron screw steamer, built by Messrs. Money Wigram & Sons, of Blackwall, for their own service to Australia in 1867, a vessel of 2,342 tons gross, which was regarded as one of the finest steamers of her day. She cost over £70,000 to build, and on trial she managed 10¼ knots which was considered very good at that time. In the early 'eighties, she was sold to J.R. Renner of Liverpool, converted passed into the hands of the Norwegians and was posted missing in summer of 1898.

Somers was called to the Bar in 1676, and he combined his work as a barrister with involvement with Whig politics. He was at the centre of the Whig party in the twenty-five years following the revolution of 1688 as chief minister to King William III of England from 1696 to 1700, and a leader of the group of influential Whigs known as the Junto from 1696 to 1716.

''They are different us in their habits''. Published in 'Karikatur zweier Herren'. Giovanni Battista Internari (1671-1769) specialised in reduction drawings after old masters for engraving. Giuseppe Canale (1725-1802) was an Italian painter and engraver, when in 1751 he was invited to Dresden to assist in engraving plates for the pictures in their gallery, and was appointed engraver to the Court.

A nude winged female, reclining on a cloud on the right, holds a trumpet and a shield with the coat of arms of the Duke of Bedford with the motto 'Che sara sara'. Beneath a monument are three cherubs: one holds a book and sings; another plays a violin; and a third plays a cello with a book of music on the ground before him. The frontispiece to a book of chamber music by Nicolo Cosimi (1660-1717), who worked for Wriothesley Russell (1680-1711), Duke of Bedford, in England 1701-5, dedicating this book to him.

A half-naked woman holding a fruit turns to look at a statue of Pan playing the pipes, atop a water pump. Nathaniel Long (1893-1955), book and magazine illustrator and printmaker who specialized in eroticised female etching. In 1948 he illustrated editions of both 'Tom Brown's Schooldays' and 'The Coral Island'.
