Strollers on the terrace of Somerset House look out at the activity on the Thames, with many people boarding steam boats and a procession of ceremonial barges. On the south side of Blackfriars Bridge one of London's several shot manufactories occupies a prominent position. From 'London from the Thames' (12 plates, 1842) by William Parrott (1813-69). Like his predecessors Prout, Bonington and T.S. Boys, Parrott used the 19th century medium of lithography to turn his own designs into prints.. Lithography, which unlike other forms of printmaking in use at the time, did not require long apprenticeships, so artists who before (and after) collaborated with specialist printmakers to turn their designs into prints, were instead able to control the reproduction of their work. Artists such as Gericault, Goya and Delacroix were enthusiastic early converts to lithography.

One of Edward Lear's nonsense poems (in the same style as the 'Owl and the Pussycat), set to music. The cover illustration shows the duck sitting on the kangaroo's tail smoking as they travel around the world. The poem originally appeared in Lear's 'Nonsense Songs', 1870. Maria Lindsay Bliss (1827-98) was one of the first women songwriters to achieve commercial success. She also scored Lear's 'The Owl and the Pussycat' for this series (N.º 5]. Australian interest.

A couple in a tavern sing from a songsheet. Both have clay pipes in their hands. After Pieter de Laer (1599-c.1641). Adam Friedel (1780- death date unknown) was a Danish artist, printmaker and publisher who, after serving in the Napoleonic wars, voluntarily joined the Greek army at the start of the Greek War of Independence, fashioning himself as Danish nobility. He was exposed by a real noble who proved his backstory to be a lie. After spending a year in Egypt he took refuge in London in 1824 where he opened a lithographer's shop. Between 1825 and 1826 Friedel printed and published, both in Paris and London, twenty-four lithographs with portraits of politicians and prominent military figures of the Greek War of Independence. He had drawn the portraits himself, in most cases from nature, while J. Bouvier coloured and lithographed these images. The series was a success and he was awarded for his contributions to the Greek Struggle for Independence with two decorations. For health reasons he travelled around a lot. He travelled to Smyrna and taught at a Greek school. He stayed at the Ottoman Capital during the Crimean War and painted several portraits of various politicians. In 1865 he asked for a pension for his services to Greece however little is known about what happened to him after that and his place and date of death is unknown.

Andreas graf von Sonnenberg (1472-1511), imperial general under Emperors Frederick III & Maximillian I, fighting the French and Turks and leading the Imperial troops in the Landshut War of Succession, in which he was captured. He was paroled, returning home and fighting no more. In 1511 he insulted Felix von Werdenberg, who arranged his assassination: he died from over twenty lance and sword wounds. He is shown in armour within an alcove with superb architectural details, a strap-work cartouche for a title left blank. On the reverse is a German-text biography relating to another portrait, within an ornate woodcut frame. Published in Jacob Schrenck von Notzing's 'Der aller Durchleuchtigisten und Grossmächtigen Kayser, Durchleuchtigisten unnd Großmächtigen Königen'.

From Frank Samuel Marryat's ''Mountains and Molehills, or Recollections of a Burnt Journal'', a sportsman-tourist's chronicle of California in the early 1850s, describing hunting, horse races, bear and bull fights. It also includes his bemused comments on social life in San Francisco, Stockton, and the gold fields. Marryat (1826-1855) left England for California via Panama with a manservant and three hunting dogs in 1850, hoping to find material for a book like his earlier Borneo. He returned to England in 1853 to marry; returning to California the same year he contracted yellow fever on board, forcing him to cut short the trip short and return to England, published this book just before he died.
