Charles Frederick Frazier Mackenzie (1825-1862) was a Church of England bishop of Central Africa. Following Dr David Livingstone's request to Cambridge, Bishop Mackenzie took on the position of being the first missionary bishop in Nyasaland (now Malawi). He opposed the slave trade causing the enmity of the Yao and he worked among the people of the Manganja country until January 1862 when he went on a supplies trip. The boat they were travelling on sank and as their medical supplies were lost, Bishop Mackenzie's malaria could not be treated. Dr Livingstone erected a cross over his grave.

Otto Eduard Leopold von Bismarck (1815-1898) was a Prussian German statesman and aristocrat of the 19th century. As Ministerpräsident of Prussia from 1862-1890, he oversaw the unification of Germany. In 1867 he became Chancellor of the North German Confederation. When the German Empire was formed in 1871, he served as its first Chancellor until 1890 and practiced Realpolitik, which gained him the nickname "The Iron Chancellor". As Chancellor, Bismarck held an important role in the German government and greatly influenced German and international politics both during and after his time of service. The Treaty of Versailles of 1871 ended the Franco-Prussian War and was signed by Adolphe Thiers, of the French Third Republic, and Otto von Bismarck, of the German Empire on February 26, 1871. This was a preliminary treaty used to solidify the initial armistice of January 27, 1871 between the two states. It was later ratified by the Treaty of Frankfurt on May 10 of the same year. The 1871 Treaty of Versailles made the decline of France obvious to the rest of the continent, and at the same time demonstrated the strength of a unified German empire. Paris's governing body, the Government of National Defense, initiated the armistice by surrendering to the Germans after the siege of Paris. Jules Favre, a prominent French politician, met with Otto von Bismarck in Versailles to sign the armistice to be put into effect January 28, 1871.

Bitlis is a town in eastern Turkey, and the capital of Bitlis Province. Kurds form the majority of the population. The history of Bitlis extends back to 2000 BC, and the city contains traces from the Urartian, Armenian, Persian, Roman, and Byzantine periods. Joseph Auguste Jules Laurens (1825 - 1901) travelled with the geographer Xavier Hommaire de Hell on a scientific journey to Turkey and Persia, making over a thousand drawings of the sites, costumes and people he encountered. After Hommaire died of cholera in 1848 Laurens sent his notes back to his widow in Paris who completed a full account of their travels, 'Voyage en Turquie et en Perse, exe´cute´ par ordre du Gouvernement Francais pendant les anne´es 1846, 1847 et 1848', containing many lithographs by Laurens.

Coloured lithograph. Sheet: 645 x 275mm (25½ x 11"), with large margins.
Section showing Blackfriars Bridge, from 'View of the North Bank of the Thames from Westminster Bridge, to London Bridge. Shewing that Part of the Improvements Suggested by Lt.-Col. Trench, which is Intended to Carry into Execution.' Colonel (later General Sir Frederick) Trench originated the idea of the Thames Embankment, for which a bill was (unsuccessfully) presented to Parliament in 1825. Revived, work on the Embankment started in 1864, although to a different design than is shown here. Drawn by Thomas Mann Baynes, the panorama shows the riverside as it appeared in 1825, from Westminster to London Bridge, with Trench's proposed embankment running from Whitehall to Blackfriars Bridge, with the skyline of London shown correclty above; this would have been one of nine lithographic sheets.
