A half-length portrait of a young boy within a stonework window with a curtain. Challoner Smith identifies the boy as the son of Lieutenant-General William Skinner (1700-80), Chief Royal Engineer from 1757 until his death); however General Skinner's only son, Captain William Campbell, was killed on Dominica in 1761. It is probable that this is a grandson: a William Campbell Skinner, captain of the Royal Engineers, was killed in 1787.

The illustrations are particularly notable as they portray British life on the eve of the Industrial Revolution.

Two fighting Africans, possibly slaves on a South American plantation. Plate to 'Souvenirs d'un aveugle (blind man)' by Jacques Etienne Victor Arago (1790 - 1855). A French writer, artist and explorer, Arago joined Louis de Freycinet on his 1817 voyage around the world aboard the ship Uranie, which inspired his witty 'Voyage autour du monde'. Although he lost his sight in 1837, he went on travelling and writing for the theatre.
