Entrance Front of Selwood Park in the County of Berks, the Seat of James Sibbald Esqr. [French translation below.]
Robt. Mitchell Archt.
[London] Publish'd Jany, 1, 1801.
Etching and aquatint in sepia, 295 x 485mm. 11½ x 19". A few faint spots of foxing. Full margins.
View of the façade of a residence in the Palladian style, with two figures walking on a path at right leading towards the columned portico. Numbered 'Plate 1' upper left. From architect Robert Mitchell's (1782 - 1809; fl.) folio 'Plans, and views in perspective, with descriptions of buildings erected in England and Scotland; and ... an essay to elucidate the Grecian, Roman and Gothic Architecture.' Mitchell designed Silwood Park, near Staines, Berkshire. In about 1788, Sir James Sibbald built a Georgian mansion on part of the present house and demolished the old "Eastmore"; he called it Selwood or Silwood Park. The name stems from the Old English for Sallow, which presumably grew then along the banks of the streams that flow through the Park. The house was, in its turn, demolished, and the present mansion was completed in 1878. During WWII it became a convalescent home for airmen; then in 1947 Imperial College purchased the house for entomological research and field studies. See BL 56.i.12.

Josias Simmler (1530-1576) was a Swiss theologian and classicist, author of the first book relating solely to the Alps. In his treatise 'De Alpibus commentarius', he collected all that the classical authors had written on the Alps, adding a good deal of material collected from his friends and correspondents. It was the first work exclusively devoted to the Alps. Another fragment of his vast plan to make his native land better known, was the work entitled 'De Helvetiorum republica', which appeared in Zurich in 1576, just before his death. It was regarded as the chief authority on Swiss constitutional matters up to 1798.

Professor Stephan Sinding and His Famous Group. "To Mennesker" (Two Mortals). [Facsimile signature:] Stephan Sinding. [On verso:] Stephan Abel Sinding was born in Thronhjem, Norway, the 4th of August, 1846. He matriculated at the University of Christiania, intending to become a lawyer. Quite by chance he discovered the great gift with which Nature had endowed him, and immediately went abroad for the purpose of studying sculpture in the great art centres. For many years he visited Berlin, Vienna and Paris, and in 1882 settled down to work in Rome. In 1883 he went to Copenhagen. Here he met the famous art patron, Dr. Carl Jacobsen, who at once realised the realism, the beauty and the grandeur of his work, and commissioned him to execute series of masterpieces for the "Glyptotek". He married a Danish lady, and became in 1890 a naturalised Dane. All his chief works were executed in Denmark, until a few years ago when he took up his domicile in Paris. The Sculpture by Stephan Sinding, on view at Harrods, May 26th-June 13, 1914. includes this master's most notable works, which have never before been exhibited in England.
