A bill for a coat, illustrated with an elevation of the company's premises. W.H. Lizars was Edinburgh's most famous engraver: he was employed to engrave the first of Audubon's 'Birds of America', including the Wild Turkey. However, because of a conflict of interest (his working on John Prideaux Selby's series of life-size birds), Audubon dropped him for Havell. However this billhead shows that even the best engravers had to engrave more than bookplates.

From 'The Tour of Doctor Syntax, in Search of a Wife' by William Combe. The various tours following the escapades of the fictional 19th century clergyman 'Dr. Syntax' were a satire on William Gilpin’s series of picturesque journeys to different parts of England. By Thomas Rowlandson (1757 - 1827).

A satire on the fish market at Billingsgate, showing a large variety of fishmongers selling their wares. In the centre a man with a basket is knocked down by a dog sprinting across the scene. A later re-print of the 1736 and is the first plate to a series of fish prints engraved by Giles King.

A general view, from the north, of Billingsgate Quay and market with stalls. In the foreground there is a crowd of streetsellers and larger retailers. In the 19th century, boats delivered fish to this small inlet of the Thames and business was conducted on the quayside. Published in Ackermann's famous work, the 'Microcosm of London', the figures were drawn by the famous caricaturist Thomas Rowlandson and the architecture by Augustus Pugin.

View of Billingsgate market from the river. In 1849, the famous London fish market was moved off the streets into its own riverside building, which was demolished c. 1873 and replaced by this arcaded market hall. It was designed by City architect Sir Horace Jones and built by John Mowlem & Co. in 1875. This building, known as Old Billingsgate Market, is now used as a corporate events venue.

A tribute to Alexander Pope has been carved into the tree by George Lyttelton, 1st Baron Lyttelton of Frankley (1709 - 1773). Lyttelton was secretary to Frederick Prince of Wales, and author of many poetical and historical works.

Two children watch a man operating a bird organ or 'orgue de Barberie', a small mechanical organ operated by turning a handle. They were a common sight on English streets in Georgian England.

After Richard Doyle (1824-83) an illustrator of the Victorian era, famous mot only for his satirical works such as 'Birds' Eye Views of Society', but also for his books for children, especially his 'In Fairyland, a series of Pictures from the Elf World', 1870.

Extremely scarce complete set of eight engravings, including one proof impression. Plates: 570 x 420mm (22½ x 16½").
Eight plates after Pieter Andreas Rysbrack's (1685-1748) series of four paintings showing fish and four paintings showing fowl. The fish are depicted lying haphazardly on tables next to baskets as if ready for preparation or on the market stall while the birds are all shown in landscape settings as if freshly shot, ready to be collected. Each bird is numbered and named in a key below the image. John Boydell reissued the plates in 1760s which had previously been published in 1735 by Richard Hylton.

A humbly dressed boy sitting in a garden, feeding cherries to birds in a nest in his arm, with two other figures feeding swans in a pond in the background to the right, with an urn on a pedestal behind them. A coat-of-arms with stag charges is below within the title area, flanked by cherubs and stags, with the motto: "Cavendo Tutus'. After Amorosi's painting, then in the collection of Duke of Devonshire (1748 - 1811). From the series 'The Most Capital Paintings in England', Boydell's first major initiative as a pioneering publisher of fine engravings.
