[London, 1736.]
Fine engraving, rare, 435 x 310mm, 17 x 12¼". Closed marginal tears and flattened horizontal crease.

Also on the table is a book and an inscribed scroll; column and curtain in background. 'After a painting said to be by Jan Maurits Quinckhardt (1688-1772), which must have been done some years after the sitter's death. Vertue saw it in the collection of his friend the 3rd Lord Coleraine, presumably at his house in Tottenham, and drew the signature [...] Vertue's plate was presumably commissioned by St. John's, though the copper plate is not known to be at the College now. There may have been some arangemnt with Brasenose, where holders of the Somerset scholarships endowed by her were required to purchase an impression of the print for 2s. [...] Brasenose has a copy of the picture, for which Thomas Hill was paid 12 guineas in 1728' (Alexander).

Tho. Seymour Lord Sudley,

H. Holbein Pinx. J. Ogborne Sculp.
Pub. Feb. 15 1786 by J. Thane Rupert Street Haymarket
Stipple with very large margins, rare; platemark 155 x 115mm (6 x 4½").
Thomas Seymour, Baron Seymour of Sudeley (c.1509-49), nobleman. At the start of Edward VI's reign, Seymour was appointed lord high admiral but was incensed that his brother Edward, duke of Somerset, was both lord protector and governor, believing that he should have one of these positions. Seymour's ambition led him to begin a series of intrigues which cost him his position and eventually his life. He defied Somerset by marrying Henry VIII's widow Catherine Parr in secret and tried to recruit several noblemen to his cause. He was believed to be plotting to kidnap Edward and Elizabeth, to marry the princess, and have himself made lord protector in place of his brother, but was arrested in 1549 and beheaded on Tower Hill soon after. It is believed that he tried to achieve too much too quickly, and might have had more success had he delayed his plots until the autumn of 1549.

Original wrappers; 39 engraved plates, in ink on frontis "Thos. Norris"; c.250 x 175mm (9¾ x 7"), with very large margins. Binding strained, some plates with small tears in margins, damp staining and age-toning.

The other three plates are a portrait of Shakespeare after Houbraken, his memorial in Holy Trinity Church at Stratford-upon-Avon and Scheemakers' 18th-century monument in Poets' Corner, Westminster Abbey. The Oxford University Press published a deluxe six-volume illustrated edition of Shakespeare, the first complete edition to be published outside London. The fine bindings and the quality of the illustrations made the edition very popular; however Sir Thomas Hanmer (1677-1746, a Speaker of the House of Commons) had edited the text (not present here) with his own conjectures, without indictating what he had changed. 'William Shakespeare: A Textual Companion' (1997) describes the edition as ''one of the worst in the eighteenth century''.

A corpulent man kneels before an equally fat woman, paying court. A parody of Hamlet's soliloquy in Act 1 (''too too sullied flesh''), which Gillray is suggesting that he is submitting to John Boydell's Shakespeare Gallery. The print appears in Humphrey's shop-window in Gillray's 'Very Slippery Weather' Publisher John Boydell commissioned paintings based on Shakespeare from prominent artists, which he intended to for an illustrated edition of the plays. The huge cost of the series contributed to the collapse of his business.

Shakespeare's Prophecy, the Last Act by One in the Tempest, or the Jack Daws in borrowed Feathers.
IC. [Isaac Cruikshank.]
London Pub Feby, 19 1795 by SW Ford No 3 Piccadilly who has lately fitted up his Caracature Exhibition on an entire Novel Stile admittance one shilling. NB Folios Lent out for the Evening.
Hand-coloured etching. 284 x 443mm (11¼ x 17½"). Trimmed. Slight creasing
A satire on the plight of Fox, deserted by most of his party. Thurlow, Fox, and Sheridan as 'Caliban', 'Trinculo', and 'Stephano' in their stolen finery are driven off by ministerial hounds set on by 'Ariel' (Pitt) and 'Prospero' (George III). Thurlow (left) in Chancellor's wig and gown, holding up the mace, the purse of the Great Seal under his arm, runs first. He is worried by a dog, wearing legal wig and bands, who is Loughborough (his successor). Fox follows, wearing royal robes and holding the orb and sceptre, he looks over his left shoulder. Behind him, with a terrified expression, runs Sheridan wearing a long gown. Though not named, he is Stephano, the drunken butler. They are followed by three hounds with the heads of Mansfield, Windham, and Portland. [Mansfield is identified by E. Hawkins as Grenville, Portland as Dundas. The heads suggest the identifications in the text, which are consistent with an apparent intention to make the hounds converts from the Opposition.] Pitt and the King stand outside the door of the 'Treasury', an archway in a stone building. The King (right) as Prospero has a beard and belted robe with a hunting-cap; he holds a wand. Ariel (Pitt) hovers on the King's right, a lean naked figure with small wings and a wisp of drapery.
