A plan of the defences of the city, lacking any detail other than the walls. A pencil note by L.t Col. James explains: "The engraving of this plan will be proceeded with as soon as we receive accurate plans of the works, of the attack and of the town. Signed Henry James, R.E. 11 March 1856". James later became director of Topographical Dept. of the War Office. The map was eventually published in the 'Report on the Siege of Sebastapol', 1857.

A monumental plan of the Siege of Sevastopol during the Crimean War, compiled by the Royal Engineers on a scale of six inches to a miles, published in the official report of the siege. The port itself fits into Sheet 3, with the defences of both sides coloured to demarque each army, green for the Russians, blue for the French and red for the British. The other sheets show the sprawling encampments of the Allies, with the British headquarters at Tractir Farm and the 'English Race Course' nearby, and the defensive arrays protecting the outer perimeters. Sheet six shows the Plain of Balaklava, site of the battle and famous 'Charge of the Light Brigade' on the 25th October 1854. The missing sheet is number eight, bottom right, showing the coast around the port of Balaklava.

The keyplate with an index of 97 people and places on a hillside overlooking Sevastapol. Thomas Jones Barker (1815-82) based his painting on photographs by Roger Fenton (1819-69), whose 'The Valley of the Shadow of Death', showing a road littered with spent cannon balls, is regarded as the first iconic photograph of war. Fenton was commissioned to photograph the Crimean War by the publishers of this print, Thomas Agnew & Sons.

In Britain, the victory was considered one of several fortuitous events that constituted the Annus Mirabilis of 1759. A view of Plaza de toros de la Real Maestranza de Caballería de Sevilla, with a bullfight in progress, with a picador in action. It was published in David Roberts's 'Picturesque Sketches in Spain', his first publication. Although the image is credited to Boys, it is known that Roberts worked on every stone. The success of this work enabled Roberts to finance his important excursion to Egypt and the Holy Land.

A view of Seville, published in 'Travels through Spain in the Years 1775 and 1776 in which several monuments of Roman and Moorish Architecture are Illustrated by Accurate Drawings taken on the Spot' by Henry Swinburne (1743-1803), an account of his travels with Sir Thomas Gascoigne, when Spain was relatively unknown land. It was the first antiquarian book on Spain to be published in England, describing early Roman and Moorish architecture with historical background.
From a scrapbook compiled by Rev. Willaim Bradford (1780-1857), Chaplain and war artist during the Peninsula Wars.

He built the present Sewerby Hall between 1714 - 1720, replacing the manor house which had existed on the site for many years.

Part of a series "Voyage Autour du Monde par les Mers de l’Inde et de la Chine de la corvette de sa Majeste La Favorite execute pendant les annees 1830,1831,1832 sous le commandement de M. Laplace". Published in Paris in 1835 under the direction of Louise Auguste de Sainson. Under the command of Laplace, La Favorite explored Indian Ocean and the route to the Indies via the Strait of Malacca, between Sumatra and Malaysia, into the China Sea (1830-1832). A view of a house in Mahé; the largest island in the Seychelles archipelago, in the Indian Ocean off East Africa. The uniformed crew of the Favorite interact with the locals in an open space surrounded by a cluster of buildings. Trees and mountains can be seen in the distance.

In a medallion suspended under arch with ballustrade and part of a carpet below. Plate from Isaac de Larrey's 'Histoire d'Angleterre' (1697-1713) from design with allegorical elements and verses in French, by Adriaen van der Werff (1659-1722), acclaimed as the most important Dutch Master during his lifetime, although his reputation declined from the late 18th century onwards.
