Bergen Op Zoom. 1747.
1747.
Etching, very rare. Sheet size: 275 x 385mm (10¾ x 15"). Trimmed to image. Central vertical crease.
The Siege of Bergen op Zoom took place during the Austrian War of Succession, when a French army, under the command of Lowendal and the overall direction of Marshal Maurice de Saxe, laid siege and captured the strategic Dutch border fortress of Bergen op Zoom on the border of Brabant and Zealand in 1747. Bergen op Zoom was defended by allies, consisting of the Dutch, Austrians, British, Hanoverians and Hessians, that supported the Pragmatic Sanction. Although tentative peace initiatives had been put forward, neither side was willing to make meaningful concessions. The capture of Bergen op Zoom would be a signal defeat for the Dutch and would open the door for an invasion of the Dutch Netherlands. This satirical print depicts the town under seige, with four scenes in each corner showing different perspectives of the event. Lettered with captions in the image, the title above and four verses of two lines each below the image.

The explosive 'hellburners' or fireships used to destroy the pontoon bridge constructed by the army of Alexander Farnese, Duke of Parma, during the seige of Antwerp. Supported and subsidised by Elizabeth I, Italian engineer Federigo Giambelli developed perhaps the earliest example of weapons of mass destruction, two unmanned ships packed with gunpowder, schrapnel and fitted with a sophisticated timer mechanism set to detonate at the ideal moment. It is recorded that over one thousand Spanish troops were killed instantly at the moment of detonation, and the seige on Antwerp was lifted for a time.

Selwood Park,
Selwood Park, in the County of Berks, the Seat of James Sibbald Esqr, towards the Pleasure Grounds [Translation into French follows.]
Robt. Mitchell Archt.
Publish'd March 25, 1801.
Etching and aquatint in sepia, 295 x 485mm. 11½ x 19". A fine impression, with full margins.
Plate 3 to Robert Mitchell's (1782 - 1809; fl.) folio 'Plans, and views in perspective, with descriptions of buildings erected in England and Scotland; and ... an essay to elucidate the Grecian, Roman and Gothic Architecture.' Mitchell designed Silwood Park, near Staines, Berkshire. In about 1788, Sir James Sibbald built a Georgian mansion on part of the present house and demolished the old "Eastmore"; he called it Selwood or Silwood Park. The name stems from the Old English for Sallow, which presumably grew then along the banks of the streams that flow through the Park. The house was, in its turn, demolished, and the present mansion was completed in 1878. During WWII it became a convalescent home for airmen; then in 1947 Imperial College purchased the house for entomological research and field studies.

Major James George Semple Lilse.
Major James George Semple Lilse.

[Pub.d September 1 1799, by W. Stewart 194 Piccadilly.]
Stipple. Sheet size: 175 x 130mm (6½ x 5¼"). Trimmed inside platemark loosing publication line.
A half-length portrait in an oval of Major James George Semple (1759 - 1815), standing to left, looking ahead with his right arm thrown out a little. He is wearing military uniform with braiding, dark stock, white cravat and a wing collar. Semple was a notorious swindler and con-man in late eighteenth century Britain who was arrested numerous times for fraud and eventually deported to Australia in 1797 on the 'The Lady Shore', which suffered a mutiny on the Brazilian coast. After several months of travelling he was finally returned via Lisbon and Tangiers to England, where he spent time in Portsmouth before being taken to London and Tothill Field. On the 6 June 1805 Semple is reported as being in Paris, and is now suspected of being the well-known spy 'Facqs', after a letter from his public house in Piccadilly claims he was 'begging to be allowed to offer his services as a spy or instigator of mutiny on enemy ships, describing his fitness for these tasks, and requesting that his past faults and follies be overlooked'. After further arrests in the following years, including one in 1814 in which he was found guilty at the Middlesex sessions of obtaining bacon and butter by fraudulent means, Semple died in Lisbon, on his way to Morocco, to which he had apparently engaged to transport himself.

Etched by J. Chapman.
Published Dec.r 1803 by J. Cundee Ivy Lane.
Stipple. Sheet: 150 x 85mm (6 x 3¼''). Trimmed, foxing.
A portrait of the adventurer and con man James George Semple Lisle (1759-1815) who travelled across the world and was often in prison for fraud. Having served in America in the American Revolutionary Wars Semple was taken prisoner in 1776 and while in America had a relationship with the writer Elizabeth Sarah Gooch. He travelled back to Europe in the 1780s and claimed to have met many members of European royalty. Semple returned to England in 1784 and was tried and sentenced to seven years' transportation for fraud. He was released on the promise that he leave England so he set off for France and while there he claimed to have witnessed the execution of Louis XVI. He returned to England in 1795 to escape trouble in France and was once again arrested and sentenced to transportation to Botany Bay, he tried to avoid this sentence by stabbing and starving himself but he recovered and was dispatched in the 'Lady Jane Shore' to Australia. However, during the voyage a mutiny broke out and Semple and some fellow sailors left the ship in a rowing boat and landed in South America. From South America Semple travelled to Tangier where he gave himself up and he was taken back to England and imprisoned in Tothill Fields Prison where he penned and published his memoir 'The Life of Major J. G. Semple Lisle'. He offered himself as a spy to the government, was once again sentenced to transportation in 1814 but was pardonned by the Prince Regent.

The Stoic philosopher Seneca about to open his veins to commit suicide on the orders of the tyrant Nero. Seneca sits on the right, his feet in a copper vessel filled with warm water to dull the pain and collect his blood. After a painting by Italian artist Luca Giordano purchased by the Fifth Earl of Exeter for display at Burleigh House, where it hung in the 'Best Bedd Chamber'. There it was seen by poet Matthew Prior, whose poem 'Picture of Seneca dying in a Bath. By Jordain. At the Right Honourable the Earl of Exeter's at Burleigh-House', 1718, celebrates the artist's role as Seneca's preserver. The painting remains at Burleigh. From "The Most Capital Paintings in England", a series of engravings in published in five volumes between the late 1760s and 1786, the first three of which (1769 to 1773) were originally published under the title Sculptura Britannica. These were a critical and financial success for the publisher John Boydell, who promoted the interests of artists, engravers and patrons, establishing a tradition in Britain for collecting prints.
