Pair of costume prints after Henry Bunbury. Both depict women from the provinces of Savoy in south-eastern France: a woman from Montmelian playing the hurdy-gurdy; and the other from the vallée de la Maurienne holding hands with two children. Although facing away from us, she also appears to be carrying a hurdy-gurdy. Bunbury (1750-1811) was an artist and caricaturist who toured France in 1767 and took the grand tour from Paris to Naples in 1769. The drawings for these prints were perhaps inspired by his travels during those years.

Of good family, amply endowed with social skills, a beautiful wife and connections in high society, Bunbury's appeal was not solely aesthetic' and his admirers 'recognized his comic talent, his informed enthusiasm for literature, and his ability to draw a momentary pang with something of the sensitivity with which Sterne could write it' (Clayton).

Three views of the Savoy Hospital for the Poor, created by Henry VII in his will and opened 1512. The hospital was suppressed by Edward VI in 1553 but refounded by Queen Mary in 1556. The hospital was misused throughout the 16th century, with Master Thomas Thurland's conduct subject to complaints, and the hospital used for lodging by vagabonds and criminals. Soldiers and sailors wounded in conflict were admitted in the 17th century, and after rebuilding in the late 17th century the hospital was formally dissolved in 1702. Plate reissued in the Society of Antiquaries's 'Vetusta Monumenta', with descriptions. The Chapel, illustrated at the bottom, is the only building to survive the demolition of the Hospital in the C19th. One of the final prints engraved by the prolific George Vertue (1684-1756).

Numbered 'Pl.11' below upper right; possibly for an edition of 'The American aboriginal portfolio' by the artist's wife Mary H. Eastman.

A participant in a Venice masked ball as Scaramouche. Scaramuccia, also known as Scaramouche, is a stock character in 17th century Italian farce. He is usually portrayed as a buffoon or boastful clown (in this latter capacity he can be considered a smaller derivative of Il Capitano). The character was invented by a 17th century Italian actor, Tiberio Fiorilli. By Alfred Henry Forrester, best known under the name of Alfred Crowquill (1804 - 1872). In 1822 Forrester wrote for the Hive and in 1823 for the Mirror. He next applied himself to the study of drawing and modelling, as well as to wood and steel engraving. He was also the writer of burlesques, drew pantomimic extravaganzas for the pictorial papers, and exhibited pen-and-ink sketches in the miniature room of the Royal Academy in 1845 and 1846. For a time he contributed sketches to ‘Punch,' where his work will be found in vols. ii. iii. and iv., and then went over to the ‘Illustrated London News' as a member of the literary and pictorial staff. As a writer and illustrator of his own writings he was very popular; upwards of twenty works came from his pen, many of them being children's books. For some years the London pantomimes were indebted to him for designs, devices, and effects. In 1851 he modelled a statuette of the Duke of Wellington, which he produced a fortnight before the duke's death and presented to Queen Victoria and the allied sovereigns. At the time when he originally started as an artist there was not much competition, and he consequently found constant work. His works have enjoyed a considerable amount of popularity.

The first service by the Skelton boat took place on 12th October 1824, when the Sunderland brig "Hebe" was wrecked in the South Bay. The seven crew of the brig were saved, and silver medals were subsequently awarded to James Fowler and Smith Tindall for their gallant conduct during the rescue. As far as can be ascertained, these were the first medals awarded to men of the Scarborough lifeboat.
