The Salutation Tavern. Macaroni and other soups hot every day.
Mr.Bunbury del. J.Bretherton f.
Publish'd 20th March 1773, New Bond Street No.134
Etching, 235 x 325mm (8¾ x 12¾"). Trimmed inside platemark top edge; occasional staining; glued to backing sheet.
Two men bowing towards each other- a pastiche inn advertisement. Etched after Henry Bunbury, an amateur printmaker who subsequently enjoyed a successful career as a designer for printsellers. 'Prints by Bunbury an his imitators were conspicuously 'polite' and appealed, like novels, 'To the Fashionable World and Polite circles'. Of good family, amply endowed with social skills, a beautiful wife and connections in high society, Bunbury's appeal was not solely aesthetic' and his admirers 'recognized his comic talent, his informed enthusiasm for literature, and his ability to draw a momentary pang with something of the sensitivity with which Sterne could write it' (Clayton). The Excellent positioned herself on the weather boy and Diadem on the lee quarter of the Spanish three-decker. Observing that the Victory was about to pass close astern, the Salvator del Mundo, which had more or less been disabled, judiciously hauled down her flag as soon as some of Victory's bow guns came to bear. [Paris: L'Imprimerie de la Republique, An V, 1797.]
Engraving. 390 x 560mm (15½ x 22").
The deaths of twelve members of La Perouse's crew at Tutuila, Island of Maouna, Samoa, December 1787. Among the dead were Robert de Lamanon, a botanist, physician and meteorologist, and Paul Antoine Fleuriot de Langle, La Perouse's second-in-command. In 1785 Jean-Francois de Galaup, comte de La Pérouse (1741-88) was sent by the French to continue Cook's exploration work in the Pacific, in the ships 'Astrolabe' & 'Boussole'. After three years, during which time he visited Chile, California, Alaska, Kamchatka, the Philippines, Japan and Hawaii, he travelled to Australia. Outside Botany Bay he met up with Captain Arthur Phillip's First Fleet, after which he set sail and was never seen again, despite an extensive rescue mission. Fortunately La Pérouse took every oportunity to send his work back to France: one crew member disembarked in Kamchatka and spent a year crossing Siberia back to France; later journals, charts and letters he left with the British at Botany Bay. Thus his discoveries were not lost with him, but published posthumously in this work, 'Voyage de la Perouse autour du monde..'. Ex Collection Norman Blackburn.

El Escorial in Madrid, the historial royal residence of the King of Spain, in particular Philip II. It served as a monastery, royal palace and tomb. It was King Philip's reaction to the Protestant Reformation, providing lodgings for the Hieronymite monks. Its structure is based on descriptions of Solomon's temple. Philip's most important contribution to the building was the donation of his personal collection of documents providing material for what was to become one of Europe's finest libraries.

When Napoleon I had completed his conquest of Northern Italy and began to push his armies towards the edges of the norther territories of the Papal State, San Marino found itself forced to choose between maintaining the alliance with the Papal State or creating a new one with France. One of the Regents, Antonio Onofri, managed to gain the respect and friendship of Napoleon, and so Napoleon issued orders that exempted San Marino's citizens from any type of taxation and gifted them 1,000 quintals of wheat and four cannons. The state was recognised by Napoleon by the Treaty of Tolentino, 1797 and by the Congress of Vienna in 1815. Published in A.V. Arnault's 'Vie politique et militaire de Napoléon', Paris, 1822-1826.

The tower of San Roque in Lisbon after its destruction in the Lisbon earthquake of 1755. The Great Lisbon Earthquake took place on November 1, 1755 at around 9:40 in the morning. The earthquake was followed by a tsunami and fire, which caused near-total destruction of the city and adjoining areas. Estimates place the death toll between 60,000 to 100,000 people, making it one of the most destructive earthquakes in history. The earthquake accentuated political tensions in Portugal and profoundly disrupted the country's eighteenth century colonial ambitions. The event was widely discussed and dwelt upon by European Enlightenment philosophers, and inspired major developments in theodicy and in the philosophy of the sublime. As the first earthquake studied scientifically for its effects over a large area, it led to the birth of modern seismology. Plate 1 from a series consisting of a titleplate and six views, 'Recueil des plus belles ruines de Lisbonne causées par le tremblement et par le feu du premier Novembre 1755'. The artists, MM. Paris and Pedegache were probably amateur local artists. The series was advertised by Le Bas in the 'Mercure de France' in March 1758 at the price of 12 livres on grand papier de chapelet, and 10 livres on grand raisin. A set of six piracies of the views was published by Robert Sayer in London (see 7971).

George Sand (Amandine-Aurore-Lucile Dupin, later Baroness Dudevant) (1804 - 1876), novelist and feminist. George Sand was an amazing author, personality, and all-around woman. She earned as much notoriety for her Bohemian lifestyle as for her written work. Born Aurore Dupin, she was the most famous woman writer in 19th-century France. A prolific and iconoclastic author of novels, stories, plays, essays, and memoirs, she represented the epitome of French romantic idealism. She demanded for women the freedom in living that was a matter of course to the men of her day. George's first independent novel, Indiana, the story of an unhappy wife who struggles to free herself from the imprisonment of marriage (explicitly called a form of slavery), made her an overnight celebrity. Subsequent novels, such as Valentine and Lélia, astounded readers with their frank exploration of women's sexual feelings and their passionate call for women's freedom to find emotional satisfaction. In the eyes of many critics, George's masterpiece is her autobiography. Though she was a brilliant writer, she was perhaps most famous for her personality and lifestyle.
