[Four maps relating to the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-5]. Russian Mine-fields off the Kuan-Tung Peninsula, Feb, - Aug. 1904. [&] Nan Shan. [&] Te-Li-Ssu. Situation from 13th to 15th June 1904. [&] Ta-Shih-Chiao. 24th July 1904.
W. & A.K. Johnston Ltd, Edinburgh & London.
Ordnance Survey, Southampton, 1910.
Four colour photo-lithographic maps, scarce, largest 420 x 450mm, 16¼ x 17¾". Folded as issued.
Four maps relating to the first year of the Russo-Japanese war (1904-5), which, to everyone's surprise, Russia lost badly. Fought because of both nations' expansionist policies in Manchuria and Korea, it was the first great war of the 20th century and saw the use of new technology and tactics including torpedo boats, submarines and mine-laying. The first map shows the Japanese blockage of the Russian fleet at Port Arthur, showing the sites of mines and their victims on both sides. The second & third maps show the battles of Te-li-Ssu and Nanshan, during the Russian attempt to break the Port Arthur blockade by land, botched by the inept commanders. The fourth map shows the small-scale Battle of Tashihchiao for control of an important junction between the main line on the South Manchurian Railway and a spur which led to the old treaty port of Yingkou, needed by the Japanese for the movement of troops, again a Japanese victory.

[Russo-Turkish War.] Übergang der Russen über den Balkan, den 20.ten July 1829.
Wunder del et fec.
[Nuremberg, c.1829.]
Etching with original hand colour. Sheet 170 x 205mm (6¾ x 8"). Trimmed.
A scene from Russo-Turkish War (1827-29): the Russian army under the German general Hans Karl von Diebitsch crossing the Balkans to threaten Constantinople. They were within 40 miles of the city when the Sultan sued for peace. The war started after the Russians helped the Greek independence movement fight the Battle of Navarino in 1827: the Turks closed the Dardanelles to Russian ships and revoked the Akkerman Convention. The war ended with the Treaty of Adrianople, which increased Russian dominance around the Black Sea area and Georgia, and, most importantly, forced the Sultan to promise autonomy for Greece.
