Francis Russell, fifth duke of Bedford (1765-1802), agriculturalist and politician. Bedford became known as a leading promoter of agricultural development. He was an original member of the board of agriculture set up in 1793, and the first president of the Smithfield Club in 1798, while he also instituted the annual agricultural fair at Woburn. Russell was also an ambitious urban developer, and used his 119 acres of land around London's West End to develop much of the Bloomsbury estate (including Bedford Square, Russell Square, and Bloomsbury Square). After Russell's death a statue was erected in Russell Square, showing Russell with one hand resting on a plough and the other holding ears of corn. Stipple after one of the three busts of Russell sculpted by Joseph Nollekens (1737-1823), whose many portrait busts make up a visual record of the personalities of late Georgian Britain.

The Generae of Patriotism, _ or _ The Bloomsbury Farmer, planting Bedfordshire Wheat.
J.s G.y des et fec.r.
Pub.d Feb.y 3.d 1796 by H Humphrey New Bond Street.
Etching with aquatint, sheet 245 x 355mm (9¾ x 14") Trimmed within plate/to plate on three sides.
Francis Russell, 5th Duke of Bedford (1765 – 1802), as a farmer, scatters guineas from a pouch slung to his shoulder. As he sows the tips of bonnets-rouges and spikes sprout up; behind him they progressively emerge more completely, and appear as little Jacobins, a raised dagger in each hand, crowding in close ranks towards the horizon, where they hail (or are smitten by) thunderbolts which dart from clouds in the upper left corner of the design and explode on reaching the ground. The soil is prepared by Richard Brinsley Sheridan (1751-1816) and James Maitland, 8th Earl of Lauderdale (1759-1839): a bull (John Bull) is harnessed to a plough which is guided by Sheridan wearing a bonnet-rouge and Lauderdale raises a whip to flog the weary bull.. Fox's smiling face is the centre of a sun which issues from clouds and shines on Bedford. Bedford was an ardent supporter of Fox and a friend of Lauderdale; for his lavish expenditure for party purposes. Bedford was a great agriculturist and an original member of the Board of Agriculture BM Satires 8783.

[London: Frederick Arnold, 1872.]
Rare tinted lithograph. Sheet 400 x 270mm (15¾ x 10¾"). Nicks in edges.
Caricature of John Russell (1792-1878), former prime minister, as a crowing cockerel standing on a scroll titled 'Alabama Claims'. In 1862, during the American Civil War, Foreign Secretary Russell allowed 'Alabama', a warship built by John Laird, to leave Birkenhead to join the Confederate navy, despite complaints from the Federal legation in London. Within two years she had taken over sixty Federal prizes before being sunk off the coast of France. In 1869 the US brought a claim for damages against Britain, seeking compensation for the damage done by ships built in this country. The original demand was for either $2 billion or the ceding of Canada to the United States but, after international arbitration, the case. was settled for $15.5 million. Despite admitting the release of the ship was a mistake, Russell obstinately refused to accept Britain should pay damages.

William Russell (1740-1818) was a practising Unitarian Dissenter, close friend and sponsor of Joseph Priestley. Rioters therefore attacked his house, on 16th July 1791, during the Priestley Riots, the Birmingham Riots of 1791, which targeted religious Dissenters, most notably the politically and theologically controversial Joseph Priestley. From "Views of the Ruins of the Principal Houses destroyed during the Riots at Birmingham. 1791." On the 14th of July, 1791, a party having met at an hotel to celebrate the anniversary of the French revolution, collected together as a mob, and proceeded for several days their devastations, setting fire to several meeting-houses and private mansions, but on the arrival of the military from Oxford and Hounslow, order was restored: at the ensuing assizes four of the ring-leaders were convicted, two of whom suffered the penalty of the law. Shortly after this occurrence barracks were erected on the Vauxhall-road, near the town, consisting of a range of handsome buildings, enclosing a spacious area for the exercise of cavalry, and a smaller for parades, a riding-school, a magazine, and an hospital.
