Publish'd according to Act of Parlt. April 26th 1781 by I. Walker Strand.
Stipple engraving printed in sanguine, with very large margins. 125 x 175mm. 5 x 7". Light paper discolouration.
George Brydges Rodney, 1st Baron Rodney [1719 - 1792] became a national hero when in 1780 he defeated a Spanish fleet off Cape St. Vincent, thus relieving Gibraltar. His crowning victory was at the Battle of the Saintes off Dominica, when on 12 April with thirty-five sail of the line he defeated the Comte de Grasse, who had thirty-three sail. The French inferiority in numbers was more than counterbalanced by the greater size and superior sailing qualities of their ships, yet five were taken and one sunk, after eleven hours' fighting. This important battle saved Jamaica and ruined French naval prestige.

Joseph Rogers (Guzeppi Ruggier) was a Maltese seaman who was instrumental in saving many lives when the 'Royal Charter' was shipwrecked on the coast of Anglesey and unreachable due to atrocious conditons. Rogers offered to swim from the vessel to shore with rope, and succeeded in reaching the rocks. A lifeline was set up to save as many of the passengers and crew, but the force of the storm crashed down on the ship and only thirty-nine lives were saved out of the possible four hundred that were recorded.
