Rosalind. vide Shakespears play of As you like it.
Painted by Angelica Kauffman. Engrav'd by Bartolozzi.
Lon. Pub'd Feb.y 10 1792 by J. Read, Coventry Court, Coventry St.
Stipple, platemark 195 x 150mm (7¾ x 6"). Trimmed inside platemark left and right.
Rosalind, from Shakespeare's 'As You Like It', after a painting by Angelica Kauffman, RA (1741 - 1807), Swiss-born Neoclassical painter who had a successful career in London and Rome. She attracted international patronage and was much admired by fellow artists. Kauffman's funeral in Rome was arranged by Antonio Canova and attended by representatives from both the Roman and foreign academies, carrying along in triumph of two of Kauffman's own works in obvious emulation of Raphael's funeral. Stipple engraving by Francesco Bartolozzi (1725-1815). Bartolozzi was born in Florence but migrated to England, and in 1768 was elected as a founding member of the Royal Academy in London (the RA did not admit engravers at this time but made an exception in his case). He was already hailed as the best engraver in Italy when he met George III's librarian Richard Dalton in 1763. Dalton invited Bartolozzi to London with a promise of an appointment as engraver to the king. In England he became the most celebrated exponent of the 'stipple' technique whereby he produced prints using dots rather than lines. In 1801 Bartolozzi was invited to Lisbon to reform the royal printing press, and he spent his final years in Portugal. This impression from the collection of Dr. Augusto Calabi of Milan, art historian who co-authored (with A.B. de Vesme) the authoritative catalogue raisonné of Bartolozzi's work. This state is not listed in the catalogue. Calabi & de Vesme 1857 (this later state not listed)

William Roscoe (1753 - 1831), banker, historian and collector. Roscoe, historian, poet, art collector, lawyer, politician and philanthropist, rose from humble beginnings in Liverpool to become one of the city's outstanding figures. He played an important role in developing the cultural life of the city while it was also growing commercially. Roscoe was called to the Bar in 1774. He entered Parliament in 1806 where he fought against the slave trade. In 1795 he published his first historical work, The Life of Lorenzo de' Medici (1795), which made his reputation as a historian. His other major work, The Life of Pope Leo X (1805), proved controversial, but was again a best seller. His 1806 poem, The Butterfly's Ball and the Grasshopper's Feast, has become a children's classic. Anti slavor. After Moses Haughton (c.1772- after 1848) for Thomas Cadell's 'The British gallery of contemporary portraits, being a series of engravings of the most eminent persons now living or lately deceased, in Great Britain and Ireland : from drawings accurately made from life, or from the most approved original pictures.'

A fine etching from Hayes's 'Rare and Curious Birds Accurately Drawn and Coloured from Their Specimens in the Menagerie at Osterly Park', first edition. Hayes (1735-1802), a self-taught artist who had illustrated 'A Natural History of British Birds' in 1775, was commissioned to record the collection of live birds belonging to Robert and Sarah Child, the owners of Osterley. It was a family affair: he employed at least seven of his children as etchers, colourists and binders. The volumes were assembled when they were ordered, with the contents varying because of what has been called 'a production line of unrivalled chaos'. A second, posthumous edition was issued in 1817, 'published for the benefit of his family'. See Ref: 32638

Rosneath is a village in Argyll and Bute, Scotland. Rosneath Castle was ruined and rebuilt many times; the final rebuilding came in 1803, three years after the previous building burnt down. Located further uphill from previous versions, it belonged to the Duke of Argyll whose family retained it until Princess Louise, daughter of Queen Victoria who had married into the family, died in 1939. In stark contrast to the earlier incarnations, it was in the Italianate style. An attractive manuscript plan, with compass points and scale below.

Sir John Ross (1777-1856), the Scottish Rear Admiral and Arctic explorer. He became an Arctic explorer after distinguished naval service in the Napoleonic Wars. In 1818, he made his first voyages in search of the Northwest Passage to China. However, deciding the route was blocked by mountains, Ross's reputation suffered when it was later shown that the mountains were an optical illusion. Ross rebounded by attracting funding, from the gin distiller Felix Booth, to command the first steam ship into the Arctic on another voyage to locate the Northwest Passage (1829-33).

Very rare lithograph, printed on chine collé. 178 x 152mm (7 x 6").

[Ross-on-Wye.] 76. [The attractive market town of Ross lies on the River Wye in Herefordshire. The town's most prominent building is the thirteenth century church, which stands on a rock overlooking the town, with its graceful spire a conspicuous landmark for miles around. It is opposite to the Markey Hall, a building or red sandstone erected in the reign of Charles II. The quiet, pleasant streets of Ross have made the town a favourite with artists and writers, amongst them Charles Dickins. It was here that he met his friend and biographer, John Forster, and decided to undertake his American reading tour of 1867-8; also associated with the town is the charitable and eccentric John Kyrles, immortalized by Alexander Poper as "The Man of Ross." Ross-on-Wye is in every way a typical market town of the West Country.]
