A view from the Quirinal Hill, with the two colossal marble statues of the 'Horse Tamers' (which gave the Quirinal its medieval name, Monte Cavallo), with the obelisk from the Mausoleum of Augustus between them. The figures are usually identified as the 'Dioscuri' (twins Castor and Pollux), but an alternative theory is that it is a double representation of Alexander and his horse Bucephalus. Either way, the inscriptions 'Opus Phidiae' (shown here) and 'Opus Praxiteles' ('the work of Phidias & Praxiteles) are discredited. Their size prevented them being looted by Napoleon

This was the frontispiece to Pinelli's series of 100 plates illustrating the the history of Republican Rome, as told in Charles Rollin's 'Istoria Romana'.

A decorative titlepage to Matteo Gregorio de Rossi's 'Prospectus locorum urbis Romae Insignium', with a central plynth containing the title, with some of the important buildings of Rome, including St Peter's Basilica, the Capidoglio and the Pantheon, arrayed behind. The 'Prospectus' contained this title and ten plates drawn and engraved by Lievin Cruyl (1634-90+), a Flemish priest, draughtsman and etcher from Ghent who was active in Rome from 1664 until c.1670. He is credited helping develop the style of 'veduta' topography, pre-dating Piranesi by nearly a century. The focus of the 'Prospectus' was the building campaign of Pope Alexander VII (to whom the work is dedicated); apparently Cruyl drew buildings that were not yet finished from architects plans. Matteo Gregorio de Rossi (1638-1702) was the son and successor of the publisher Giovanni Battista de Rossi.

Hieronymus Cock (c.1517-70) visited Rome in the late 1540s, inspiring him to start up his own publishing firm in Antwerp in 1548, which became the most important print publishing firm from outside Italy. After his death in 1570 the firm was continued by his widow (Volcxken Diercx) until her death in 1600, when many of the plates were acquired by Philips Galle. However this plate seems to have been acquired by the van Doetecum brothers, who published it in 'Operum Antiquorum Romanorum' in 1562, with Cock's name removed.

'Life in Rome', satirising the attractions of the city to Grand Tourists. Four girls with open bodices sit on a swing suspended in a doorway, playing tamborines, with a group of monks and a man playing the lute lying beneath all enjoying the view. Across the road tourists sit outside a coffee shop and a man sells wine from barrels on his donkey.

Engraving on four sheets. Each 185 x 310mm (7¼ x 12¼"), with very large margins, two plates watermarked 'J. Whatman 1816'. Excellent condition with some faint scuffing in the margins.
A prospect of Rome from the north, with a 44-point key of places from the Porta del Popolo to the Vatican Gardens and 'Fortificationi Moderne'. The view was drawn by de Lincler, a French painter, engraved by Israel Silvestre and originally published in Paris by Pierre Mariette in 1642. The Whatman paper of this example suggests a London printing.

A view of the church of the Santissima Trinità dei Monti, often called merely the Trinità dei Monti in Rome. It is best known for its commanding position above the Spanish Steps which lead down to the Piazza di Spagna. Robert Charles Goff (1837–1922) was a printmaker and painter who specialised in topographical scenes, strongly influenced by the work of James McNeill Whistler. Brighton and Hove Museum and Art Gallery hold a large collection of Goff's work.

Engraving after a painting by Gaspar Dughet (1615-75), who often used the name of his brother-in-law and teacher, Nicolas Poussin. Along with Claude Lorrain, Dughet was one of the landscape painters whose works were best-known to British audiences in the 18th century. His landscapes, disseminated through prints such as this, were highly influential on the nascent English landscape school. The Acqua Vergine aquaduct was built by Marcus Agrippa in 19 BC, primarily to supply Agrippa's Baths. Said to have the purest water in Rome, it supplies the Trevi Fountain, fountains in Piazza Navona and di Spagna.
