A three-quarter length portrait of Stephen Jordan Rigaud (1816-1859), with a right hand on his hip, from the Ipswich Museum Portraits series published by George Ransom in 1852: the sixty portraits of distinguished men of science were commissioned to commemorate the foundation of the museum in 1846. Before Rigaud was elected Bishop of Antigua in 1858, where he died a year later, he was the headmaster of what is now Ipswich School from 1850 until his consecration.

A rural scene on a hillside overlooking a mountain range. Cattle can be seen grazing to the right of a path leading to a large building. A number of figures are outside the building, some of whom are on horseback, and some in conversation. There is also a 'look out' post on stilts in the distance to the left, with three figures at the top.

A satire on the George III's influence on selecting members of the Royal Academy, written by John Wolcot (1738-1819). The target of the satire is the election of Associates in 1790, when the competition was between Thomas Lawrence, favourite of the king (who is described as having 'a superior knowledge in painting) and Francis Wheatley. The author decries the disloyalty of the Academicians, of whom only three voted for the king's choice, against 16 for Wheatley. On the last page is 'A List of Peter Pindar's Works' with a price list.

Rimorsi e Confessione, a conversation between the Church and the Italian public, following the riots of 1848. The church criticizes the way that the country allowed such riots to take place and the lack of compassion and lack of judgement and sense from the State. Particular criticism is against Francesco Saverio del Carretto (1777-1861) who was a minister of police for King Ferdinand II, but following the start of the Revolution in 1848, he saw no other choice than to escape, and he fled to France. The riots began following a fierce outbreak of cholera in Sicily; del Carretto authorised the arrest of 750 people, of which hundreds were sentenced to death. His escape also meant that he was banished from the courts and any ministerial business.

A ring-tailed cat, a member of the racoon family, native to south-west North America. From 'Zoological Sketches by Joseph Wolf. Made for the Zoological Society of London, from animals in their vivarium, in the Regent's Park', issued in two parts, 1861 and 1867. Joseph Wolf (1820-99), a German artist, specialized in natural history illustration, and is considered one of the great pioneers of wildlife art, having depicted animals accurately in lifelike postures. He worked with John Gould on 'The Birds of Great Britain'. Sir Edwin Landseer considered him 'without exception, the best all-round animal artist who ever lived'.

French ships entering the harbour of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The Battle of Rio de Janeiro was a raid in September 1711 on the port during the War of Spanish Succession by a French squadron under buccaneer René Duguay-Trouin. The Portuguese defenders, including the city's governor and an admiral of the fleet anchored there, were unable to put up effective resistance in spite of numerical advantages. Four Portuguese ships of the line were lost, and the city had to pay a ransom to avoid the destruction of its defences. For the 'Galerie historique de Versailles', numbered '346' above image.

Music sheet, hand-coloured etching above engraved lettering and music, watermarked laid paper; four watchmen surrounding a drunken man on the street at night. 320 x 195mm, 12½ x 7¾". Some slight creasing; left margin slightly tatty and chipped.
'XXIII' inscribed above image. Music and four verses beginning, "As tipling John was jogging on...", four other verses and a line of music 'for the flute' at bottom. The reference appears to be to the burning of Daniel Burgess's Presbyterian meeting house in Carey Street, Lincolns Inn, on 1 March 1710, and the song was first published at about that time. The BM attribute this version to George Bickham the Younger (c.1706 - 1771) on stylistic grounds.

A portrait of naval officer Edward Riou (1762-1801) who served as midshipman of Capt. James Cook's Third Voyage to Australia and received his command of the former frigate HMS Guardian transporting convicts to Australia. Attempting to replenish their fresh water supplies the ship Riou ordered the Guardian be sailed close to an iceberg, boats were sent out to gather the ice but when all had returned a fog descended hiding the iceberg from view. After careful sailing, using lookouts it seemed the ship had managed to avoid hitting the iceberg, however the ship was caught in a gust of wind and was driven into the wall of ice nearly sinking outright. After several attempts to stop the flooding into the damaged hull, most of the crew abandoned ship. Despite fully anticipating his death, Riou refused to leave his ship, and he and a few others were left to attempt the nearly impossible task of navigating the sinking ship several hundred leagues towards the Cape of Good Hope. After nine weeks at sea, and with continued labour and endurance, Riou successfully navigated his half-sunk ship back to port, saving the lives of those who had elected to remain with him. Riou negotiated the pardon of the few remaining convicts left on board.

A gentle caricature portrait of a stout elderly man standing in profile to the left, holding a wallet and pencil. The BM suggests two identifications: 'Mr Ripley'; and Levy Barent Cohen (1740-1808, father-in-law of N. M. Rothschild), based on the title 'Mr Cohen' added for the Maclean edition of 1824. As Levy Barent Cohen died when Dighton was 13, this seems unlikely.

The etched initials ''J.M.W.T.'' appear on a Proof of Girtin's York Minster found in Turner's house and now belonging to Mr. Harold Mellor. Probably the same occurs on the other Girtin plates''.

Published for the first edition of Sir Henry Chauncy's (1632 - 1719) Historical Antiquities of Hertfordshire 1700. The Stone family purchased the land in 1603 from Edward Newport and finished the Jacobean house in c.1615. Thomas Stone died in 1696 and left no sons, so his eldest daughter Penelope inherited. Risden House is now known as Julians.

A fisherman angling in fast-flowing water close to some rapids. George Soper RE (1870 - 1942), became an expert printmaker and gained most recognition during his lifetime as an etcher, and later as a wood engraver. Over three decades he produced more than five hundred prints.

Pitt as a quack doctor supported by Dundas, suggesting that his ''Mint Seed is the most Efficatious Remedy in the World''. A uncaricatured Napoleon, holding three cannon balls in his hand, replies ''I deny that Doctor, my Pills are far more certain in thier operation & much quicker in their effect...''. To the right a grotesque man pushes a short blunderbuss in the face of a gaping and terrified Austrian officer (probably Melas, who asked for an armistice after Marengo, 14 June). A satire on Pitt's policy of subsidizing continental powers, including a subsidy convention had been signed at Vienna for £2,000,000 on June 20th.

A political satire on the Westminster Election of 1784. Charles James Fox and Cecil Wray are named as Athenian statesmen Themistocles and Demosthenes while Samuel Hood, who has previously been MP for Westminster for the Whigs had changed sides and was standing again but supported by the Tories, is shown as Judas Iscariot. A plate from 'History of the Westminster Election, 1784'.

A satirical print commenting on a bill banning the distillation of alcohol using grain in favour for the use of sugar and molasses. A black magician is shown holding a wand made of sugar cane shocking Sir John Sinclair and Arthur Young. On the left is a large barrel and distilling equipment and in the centre grotesque figures representing vice and sickness dance in a container of liquid.
