[Cardinal Richelieu] Armandus Joannes du Plessis Cardinalis Dux de Richelieu [...]
[after Philippe de Champaigne, 1600]
Engraving with two accompanying letterpress sheets, 17th century watermark; each 470 x 350mm (18½ x 13¾"), very large margins on 3 sides. Time stained. Trimmed nearly to image on left.
Armand Jean du Plessis, Cardinal-Duke of Richelieu and of Frontac (1585-1642), French clergyman, nobleman and statesman. Richelieu became a cardinal in 1622 and Louis XIII's chief minister in 1642. On his death he was succeeded in this position by his protegé, Cardinal Mazarin. A shrewd statesman who played a key role in the transformation of France into a modern centralized state and helped ensure French dominance in the Thirty Years' War (1618-48), Richelieu was also a great patron of the arts, whose achievements in this field included the founding of the Académie Française. From 'Les Portraits des Hommes Illustres Francois qui sont Peints dans la Galerie du Palais Cardinal de Richelieu' (1660). The book reproduces the portraits of great men (and women) hanging in Richelieu's 'Galerie des hommes illustres' by Simon Vouet and Philippe de Champaigne (although only four of the original paintings survive). This portrait, of Richelieu himself, concluded the sequence. Champaigne painted several versions of the portrait, including those in the National Gallery, London, and the Louvre.
