[n.d. c.1800]
Rare lithograph, sheet 355 x 495mm (14 x 18½"), very large margins. Repaired tears in margins.
A Swedish print of the Skirmish at Bender (1 February 1713), with Charles XII of Sweden (1682 – 1718) in the middle of the action. After the defeat of the Swedish at the Battle of Poltava in 1709, Charles was far away from Sweden and he needed somewhere to go. The Ottoman Empire had disliked Russia since time immemorial so Charles XII received the hospitality of Sultan Ahmed III and fled to the town of Bender in the modern country of Moldova. Charles XII of Sweden overstayed his welcome by a few years; so the Ottoman forces, forced him out and after some fighting Charles XII and his fighters were captured. After some time as a prisoner, Charles XII and his soldiers were released when news about the Swedish victory in the Battle of Gadebusch reached the Ottomans.

Fox, his left hand grasping a crutch-headed stick, turns to North and sings. North (right), also with a stick, sings. Through the wings peers the anxious-looking, spectacled profile of Burke (right). Three framed pictures decorate the wall behind the performers: 'The fox who had lost his Tail', a tail-less fox looking at four others who are discussing the situation. This is flanked by two oval pictures, 'Fox and Crow' (left), the fox looking up longingly at the crow on a branch, and 'Fox and Grapes' (right), a fox on its hind-legs below a vine-branch.

Rare handbill. Sheet: 250 x 185mm (9¾ x 7¼''). Creases and staining.
A bill pleading for the support of traditional hand spinners in Cheshire. Between 1861 and 1865 there was a depression in the cotton trade brought about by over production at a time of retracting markets, partly influenced by the American Revolution. Many factories closed in Cheshire, Lancashire and Derbyshire putting hundreds out of work. Local relief charities were set up, by 1864 the market improved but by this stage many workers had emigrated and work in these areas had diversified.

Pub.d June 5.th 1797. by H. Humphrey 27. S.t James's Street
Very rare hand-coloured etching, sheet 385 x 540mm (15¼ x 21"). Trimmed within plate and glued to backing card.
Caricature of Paul Benfield (1741-1810), of the East India Company, who made a fortune in India as a trader, banker, and contractor, and was notorous through Burke's (published) speech on the debts of the Nabob of Arcot oppresser. He lost his fortune establishing a mercantile firm in London, called Boyd, Benfield, & Co which engaged in speculations which turned out badly, and Benfield's fortune collapsed rapidly. He died in Paris in poverty. A small dark-complexioned man wearing spectacles rides a galloping horse through Hyde Park. There is a background of grass and trees, and in the distance a building with a pediment, evidently the new Knightsbridge Barracks.

Portrait of Bennilong; a native of New Holland,
Portrait of Bennilong; a native of New Holland, who after experiencing for two years the Luxuries of England, returned to his own Country and resumed all his savage Habits.
[London, 1817.]
Engraving. 210 x 160mm (8¼ x 6¼"). Trimmed to plate at top, narrow margins elsewhere.
Bennelong (c.1764-1813) was an aborigine kidnapped by Governor Philip in 1789 and forced to learn English, following orders from King George III to open relations with the locals. He was brought to England in 1792 and was said to have had an audience with the king, although there is no evidence. He returned to Australia in 1795 where he returned to the bush and led a clan. His grave was found in 2011 in the garden of a private house in present-day Putney, New South Wales, which is being turned into a museum. From George Alexander Cooke's 'Modern and Authentic System of Universal Geography'.
Rex Nan Kivell Collection, NK4777. A similar portrait thought to depict Bennelong, signed 'W.W.' is now in the Dixson Galleries of the State Library of New South Wales.
