[Recruitment campaign 1914-6] Buckingham Palace. To My People.
[Recruitment campaign 1914-6] Buckingham Palace. To My People. At this grave moment in the struggle between my people and a highly organised enemy who has transgressed the Laws of Nations and changed the ordinance that binds civilized Europe together, I appeal to you. I rejoice in my Empire's effort, and I feel pride in the voluntary response from my Subjects all over the world who have sacrificed home, fortune, and life itself, in order that another may not inherit the free Empire which their ancestors and mine have built. I ask you to make good these sacrifices. The end is not in sight. More men and yet more are wanted to keep my Armies in the Field, and through them to secure Victory and enduring Peace. In ancient days the darkest moment has ever produced in our race the sternest resolve. I ask you, men of all classes, to come forward voluntarily and take your share in the fight. In freely responding to my appeal, you will be giving your support to our brothers, who, for long months, have nobly upheld Britain's past traditions, and the glory of her Arms. George R.I.

[London: William Bulmer & Co, 1799.]
Etching with fine hand colour. 230 x 295mm (9 x 11½"). Trimmed within plate, faint mount burn.
A fine etching from Hayes's 'Rare and Curious Birds Accurately Drawn and Coloured from Their Specimens in the Menagerie at Osterly Park', first edition. Hayes (1735-1802), a self-taught artist who had illustrated 'A Natural History of British Birds' in 1775, was commissioned to record the collection of live birds belonging to Robert and Sarah Child, the owners of Osterley. It was a family affair: he employed at least seven of his children as etchers, colourists and binders. The volumes were assembled when they were ordered, with the contents varying because of what has been called 'a production line of unrivalled chaos'. A second, posthumous edition was issued in 1817, 'published for the benefit of his family'.

Rich.d Redgrave. Etch Club [1844]
Etching on india, very large margins; platemark 185 x 135mm (7¼ x 5¼"). Proof before additional text added. Crease upper left margin.
One of few etchings by painter and arts administrator Richard Redgrave (1804-88), in which an angel looks over an unwell child (in the final state it was accompanied by verse by Redgrave). In 1837 Redgrave was a founding member of the Etching Club, under whose auspices this print was published in 1844. Kathryn Moore Heleniak (DNB) writes that: 'it was in the 1840s that Redgrave produced his most memorable paintings, 'lessons of philanthropic appeal on behalf of the oppressed and miserable', and this print, like many of his works in this period, draws attention to the perils and trials facing humanity. In later years Redgrave painted less and became an influential arts educator and administrator, working with museums, international exhibitions, writing books and becoming surveyor of the queen's pictures.

Reform. A National Anthem, to be sung by the Frome Political Union, On Tuesday, May 15th, 1832. "Lo! we answer! see we come!/ Quick at Freedom's holy call;/ We come! we come! we come! we come!/ To do the glorious work of all;/ And hark! we raise from sea to sea,/ The sacred watchword Liberty.// God is our guide! from field from wave,/ From plough, from anvil, and from loom,/ We come, our country's rights to save,/ And speak a tyrant's faction's doom;/ And hark! we raise from sea to sea,/ The sacred watchword Liberty.// "God is our guide! no swords we draw,/ We kindle not war's battle fires' By union, justice, reason, law,/ We claim the birthright of our sires,/ We raise the watchword Liberty,/ We will, we will, we will be free!"
Tuck, printer, Frome
Letterpress, 225 x 140mm. 8¾ x 5½". Laid on album sheet.
From the Archives of Captain William John Cole, R.N, based in Lechlade, Gloucestershire. A handbill with an anthem to be sung by the Political Union of Frome, Somerset. Frome was one of the new boroughs created by the Great Reform Act which finally received the Royal Assent in June 1832. Prior to this, Frome was one of the larger towns in England without Parliamentary representation. The Great Reform Act granted seats in the House of Commons to towns with large populations that had emerged during the Industrial Revolution, while removing seats for areas with very small populations.

London: Printed and published by Thomas Adderley Phipps, 25, Brydges-street, Covent-garden.
Letterpress broadside. Sheet 395 x 330mm (15½ x 13"). Creases, wear to edges.
A rare broadsheet, listing the returns of a parliamentary motion moved by Lieutenant-General Isaac Gascoyne (c.1763-1841) in an attempt to block the reform of Parliament. Gascoyne entered Parliament in 1796 and in his time as MP opposed the abolition of both the Slave Trade & bull-baiting and Catholic Emancipation. In 1812 he was able to identify the assassin of Spencer Perceval, shot in the House of Commons. When this motion carried, the Government dissolved Parliament and called a General Election, hoping to destroy the anti-reform majority. It worked: Gascoyne lost his seat and the Reform Act passed in 1832.
