[The Sick Child] ["Hush my babe be still and slumber / Holy angels guard thy bed"]
Rich.d Redgrave. Etch Club [1844]
Etching on india, very large margins; platemark 185 x 135mm (7¼ x 5¼"). Proof before additional text added. Crease upper left margin.
One of few etchings by painter and arts administrator Richard Redgrave (1804-88), in which an angel looks over an unwell child (in the final state it was accompanied by verse by Redgrave). In 1837 Redgrave was a founding member of the Etching Club, under whose auspices this print was published in 1844. Kathryn Moore Heleniak (DNB) writes that: 'it was in the 1840s that Redgrave produced his most memorable paintings, 'lessons of philanthropic appeal on behalf of the oppressed and miserable', and this print, like many of his works in this period, draws attention to the perils and trials facing humanity. In later years Redgrave painted less and became an influential arts educator and administrator, working with museums, international exhibitions, writing books and becoming surveyor of the queen's pictures.

A rare broadsheet, listing the returns of a parliamentary motion moved by Lieutenant-General Isaac Gascoyne (c.1763-1841) in an attempt to block the reform of Parliament. Gascoyne entered Parliament in 1796 and in his time as MP opposed the abolition of both the Slave Trade & bull-baiting and Catholic Emancipation. In 1812 he was able to identify the assassin of Spencer Perceval, shot in the House of Commons. When this motion carried, the Government dissolved Parliament and called a General Election, hoping to destroy the anti-reform majority. It worked: Gascoyne lost his seat and the Reform Act passed in 1832.
