A scene depicting the naval battle of Quiberon Bay, which took place on 20th November 1759 during the Seven Years' War in Quiberon Bay, off the coast of France near St. Nazaire. The British Admiral Sir Edward Hawke, with 24 ships, caught up with a French fleet, under the command of Marshal de Conflans. After hard fighting, the British sank, captured, or forced aground six of the French fleet, and dispersed the rest, giving the Royal Navy one of it's greatest victories, as part of the Annus Mirabilis of 1759.

Scene from 'Don Quixote', in which Quixote gets the barber's basin that he believes to be the helmet of the fictional Moorish king Mabrino. Illustration to 'The History and Adventures of the Renowned Don Quixote, Translated from the Spanish of Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, by Dr Smollett'. Smollett's translation was first published in 1755 but was republished along with other of his works in the 1780s, with engravings by the poet and artist William Blake (1757-1827). This early work was one of many Blake engraved from designs by his friend Thomas Stothard, Britain's most prolific book illustrator. While establishing himself as a copy engraver in the early 1780s, Blake was also studying at the Royal Academy and developing the highly personal approach he used in his original watercolours. The figure might be actor John Quick, who played Quiz when the play opened at Covent Garden 17 Feb. 1786.

Portrait of François Rabelais (born between 1483 and 1494; died 1553), French writer who has been called the first great French prose author. A humanist of the French Renaissance and Greek scholar, he attracted opposition from both Protestant theologian John Calvin and from the hierarchy of the Catholic Church. Though in his day he was best known as a physician, scholar, diplomat, and Catholic priest, later he became better known as a satirist for his depictions of the grotesque, and for his larger-than-life characters.

Unusual view of Rabeneck castle in Switzerland. Amateur lithograph by the army officer and politician Frederick William Trench (c.1777-1859), whose father owned Heywood, Ballynakill in Queen's County. Trench was also keenly interested in architecture: in 1815 he proposed a vast monument to British naval and military victories over France on the site which became Trafalgar Square, and in 1824 he launched a project for an embankment on the north side of the Thames (in conjunction with which a long print of the project was produced). Closely fought race between three horses in foreground. By Samuel Howitt (1756/7-1823), painter and etcher. From a wealthy family, Howitt was a keen sportsman who became an artist (drawing on his sporting enthusiasms) when financial difficulties forced him to earn a living. In 1779 Howitt married Elizabeth Rowlandson, sister of the artist Thomas Rowlandson, and the two men were friends, with some similarities in their watercolour style. A young Quaker girl standing with hands clasped at waist, a cloak under her left arm, wearing plain clothes with frilled sleeves and a headscarf. After Marcellus Laroon (1648/1649 or 1653 - 1702), a 19th century copy of the (c.1690) plate for the series 'The Cryes of the City of London Drawne after the Life'.
