View of a country house from the grounds. Numbered 'Plate 11' upper left. From architect Robert Mitchell's (1782 - 1809; fl.) folio 'Plans, and views in perspective, with descriptions of buildings erected in England and Scotland; and ... an essay to elucidate the Grecian, Roman and Gothic Architecture.' Mitchell designed Preston Hall, Midlothian, Scotland. Preston Hall, the late 18th century mansion in Midlothian. A house was originally built in 1700 for Roderick Mackenzie, and in 1738 the estate was bought by Henrietta, widow of Alexander Gordon, 2nd Duke of Gordon, with additions made to the house in 1740. She laid out the extensive parkland around the house prior to her death in 1760. In 1789 Preston Hall was purchased by Alexander Callander, who found the house to be in poor condition, and so had it demolished. He hired the architect Robert Mitchell to design a replacement house, the foundation stone of which was laid in 1791.

John Preston (1587-1628) was a an English puritan minister of the church and master of Emmanuel College, Cambridge. He was in attendance at the death of James I as Chaplain-in-ordinary to Prince Charles, and accompanied Charles and Buckingham to Whitehall, where the public proclamation of Charles's accession was made.

A gaily dressed young woman wearing a feathered hat tilted forward on her high-dressed hair and a low-cut bodice sculls a naval officer who sits in the stern. The admiral is in naval uniform with a pigtail queue and holds his cane in the water and looking through a single eye-glass at a swan accompanied by a cygnet. A King Charles dog puts its paws on the edge of the boat and looks at the swan.Oon the stern of the boat is a design of a cupid riding on a dolphin. The water winds among lawns, trees, and bushes. In the middle distance two ladies are fishing; one holds a rod over the water, the other, seated beside her, holds up a fish.

Pierre-Louis Dubus (1721-99), French comic actor known as simply 'Préville'. As the text on the print recounts, he joined the Comédie Francaise in 1753 in the role of Crispin in Jean-François Regnard's 'Le Légitaire Universel'. Admired by Louis XV and a friend of the greatest British actor of the day, David Garrick (who christened him 'enfant de la nature'), he created more than sixty roles during his time at the Comédie Francaise (1753-86). Portrayed here in decorative frame with symbols of the arts and scene from another play by Regnard, 'Les Folies Amoureuses'.

Robert Price (1653-1732) was a British judge and politician. In 1682 Price was appointed Attorney General for South Wales, as well as alderman of the city of Hereford; the following year he became recorder of Radnor; then steward to Catherine of Braganza in 1684; town clerk of Gloucester 1685; and King's Counsel for Ludlow in 1686. Price was removed as Attorney General and from other offices in 1688; he later successfully opposed William III's 1695 grant of lands in Denbighshire to William Bentinck, 1st Earl of Portland, earning the appellation "patriot of his native country". He was appointed a judge in Wales in 1700. Robert Price also served as Member of Parliament for Weobley during this period, resigning the seat in favour of his elder son Thomas in 1702; Queen Anne upon her succession had elevated Price to the House of Lords as a Baron of the Exchequer. In 1726 he became a justice of the Court of Common Pleas.

Copy from portrait when Price was baron of the Exchequer, engraved and published by Vertue after a painting by Kneller c.1702. He is placed above a symbolic 'Law Tree' flanked by allegorical figures representing justice and law on pedestals. Philip Overton [c.1680 - 1745] was the last of the great Overton dynasty of printsellers and publishers in the eighteenth century. 'ID' collectors' mark in ink on verso.

The theologian and natural philosopher Joseph Priestley (1733-1804) holds burning papers while smiling maliciously. One of many attacks on Priestley as atheistical and seditious. This is a reissue of a plate first published in the 'Attic Miscellany' in 1791 as 'Docter Philogiston, The Priestley Politician or the Political Priest' (BM Satires 7887). The 'Carlton House Magazine' often reissued plates in this way.
