In 1806 John Rennie and Joseph Whidbey were commissioned to make Plymouth a safe haven for the Channel Fleet during the Napoleonic Wars. Work started in 1812 and four million tons of rock were used, at a cost of £1.5 million, equivalent to £90 million today.

Huggins, representing the disasterous situation of 23 sail of Merchantmen, in Deadman's Bay, and Carwater, Plymouth, as they actually appeared on the third day after the tremendous Gale of the 23rd Nov.r 1824, Is most respectfully dedicated, by their most Obedient Servent, Capt.n James Shepherd.

Extremely rare and very large aquatint of the aftermath of the Great Storm of 1824, when hurricane force winds struck the south west coast of England. Besides wrecking the ships seen here, it also smashed the Plymouth breakwater, removing 200,000 tons of stone.

Willyams served as chaplain of the Swiftsure. He was present at the Battle of the Nile and according to DNB his is 'the first, the most particular, and the most authentic account of the battle'.

From John Boydell's huge and influential series of engravings made from 'The Most Capital Paintings in England'. The source painting is here attributed to Claude Lorraine, although that attribution has been doubted by Marcel Röthlisberger: 'the incoherent distribution of the still-life motifs in the foreground - which may be due to the figure painter - is foreign to Claude; among the genre motifs, some, like the lute and the barrels, are frequent in his early work, others, like the pots with flowers and the chairs, never appear in Claude. (..) The picture may be by Claude, around 1629/31; or one of the numerous fakes of the 1630's of which Baldinucci speaks (...); or from the circle of Tassi, i.e. earlier than the above-mentioned works by Claude. It is unlikely that in 1638 Claude would imitate so closely a work of a predecessor. Until more is known about the circle of Tassi and the beginnings of Claude, the problem seems insoluble.'

George Pochin (1732-1798) was a Colonel of the Leicestershire militia and served in the American War. Pochin, who already had estates in Leicestershire, succeeded to the title of Lord of the Manor of Bourne Abbots in 1761, where he built a fine mansion, the Abbey House; he stayed there until his death in 1798. He was Lord of the Manor for some 37 years, and both he and his wife are remembered by a marble plaque to record their lives of devotion to public service and Christian charity. He was Colonel of the Leicestershire Regiment of Militia, Deputy Lieutenant and Magistrate in the Counties of Leicestershire and Lincolnshire. The artist is Matthew William Peters (1742-1814), most famous for his provocative painting of a courtesan (known as 'Lydia' in the mezzotint copy). He came to regret his choice of subject, as he was ordained in 1781, becoming the Royal Academy's chaplain (1784-8), then chaplain to the Prince of Wales.

John Bewick (1760-95) was the younger brother and apprentice of Thomas Bewick (1753-1828), from whom he learned wood engraving. He died the year this plate was first published.
