[Amsterdam c.1802.]
Very scarce engraving with etching. Sheet 630 x 490mm (24¾ x 19¼"). Repairs, laid on backing paper.
A Dutch allegory of the Treaty of Amiens in 1802. The people dance around a plinth on which Britannia and a female allegory of the Batavian Republic stand together. To the left a female 'War' is knocked from the sky by a lightning bolt. After Holland had become a sister-republic of France after the fall of the Dutch Republic in 1795, she and her colonies became targets of the British. The Dutch had suffered considerable losses and thus the return of Cape Colony and their colonies in the West Indies (but not Ceylon) was something to be celebrated. However the ensuing peace only lasted a year and Cape colony was lost permanently in 1806. A preparatory sketch of the bottom right corner is in the Rijksmuseum. https://www.rijksmuseum.nl/en/collection/RP-T-1888-A-1430. Trimmed impression see 40385.

[George III sacks William Pitt the Younger] Géorge se Dépitte et Signe Enfin la Paix Générale.
[n.d., c.1801.]
Rare etching. Sheet 320 x 410mm (12½ x 16"). Trimmed within plate, repaired tear entering printed border at top.
George III hits Pitt on his shoulder with his sceptre and kicks him in the backside, causing the crown to topple from his head. The king sits at a table, on which is a paper he is signing, supposedly the Treaty of Amiens. A French satire making political capital by misrepresenting Pitt's leaving office as being sacked by George for opposing any peace negotiations with France, rather than him resigning for failing to achieve Catholic Emancipation. Pitt resigned on February 16th, 1801, during an episode of the king's madness; a preliminary agreement was signed in London on September 30th; the full Treaty of Amiens was signed at 3 a.m. on March 25th, 1802. George (BM Satire 9780) posits a publication date of May 1802; however the BM website states that 1801, during the negotiations, is more likely. BM Satires 9870.

George Se Dépitte Et Signe Enfin La Paix Générale.
A Paris chez Depueille rue des Mathurins Jacques aux deux Pilastres d'Or. [n.d., c.1801.]
Etching with some stippling, 330 x 410mm. 13 x 16¼". A fine and scarce impression with full margins; (printer's) crease to upper part of plate.
Satirical French view of the royal reaction to the Treaty of Amiens, signed 25th March 1802 to temporarily end hostilities between the French Republic and the United Kingdom during the French Revolutionary Wars. With a wonderful expression of disgust, a seated George III kicks William Pitt's posterior with his right leg, while he strikes his shoulder with the sceptre. His left hand rests on a round table, and holds a pen with which he signs the peace treaty, registering silent anger; Pitt puts his right forefinger in his mouth and hurries off to the left, distressed and alarmed. The King's crown is falling from his head; his waistcoat is unbuttoned and his shirt escapes beneath it. His table is supported by intertwined dolphins. The consequent peace lasted only one year, and was the only period of peace during the so-called 'Great French War' between 1793 and 1815. Under the treaty, the United Kingdom recognised the French Republic; George III had only two years previously dropped the English crown's historical claim, dating back to 1340 and Edward III, to the now-defunct French Kingdom. [The Treaty of Paris] A Prophecy. The Coach Overturn'd: or, the fall of Mortimer.
H: Tucker Sculp.t [after Jefferyes Hamett O'Neale].
[n.d., c.1762.]
Etching. 160 x 135mm (6¼ x 5¼"). Creases and folds as normal.
A satire on the negotiations for the Treaty of Paris, ending the Seven Year's War. A coach carrying the George III and Queen Charlotte (depicted as lions) crashes into a rock, after Lord Bute (the driver) has lost control having been blinded by 'Havana Snuff'. The horses (bearing names connected with British actions in the Seven Years War: "Germany", "Guardeloup", "Pondechery", "America", "Martinico" and "Quebec") run off. Lord Bute was accused of taking bribes to ease the negotiations in France's favour. This is a copy of a satire published by John Williams, lacking 16 lines of verse underneath. The capture of a French merchant frigate. Admiral Sir George Montagu (1750–1829) was appointed to the 32-gun frigate HMS Pearl, which when cruising near the Azores on 14 September 1779, captured the Spanish frigate Santa Monica of equal force. In December Pearl sailed with the fleet under Sir George Rodney, and assisted in the capture of the Caracas convoy; but having sprung her foremast, was ordered home with the prizes. She was afterwards sent out to North America, and on 30 September 1780, while on a cruise off the Bermudas, captured the Espérance, a frigate-built privateer of 32 guns. In the battle of Cape Henry, on 16 March 1781, she acted as repeating frigate. She was not with the fleet during the battle of the Chesapeake on 5 September, but joined it, still off Cape Henry, on the 14th, and was left to keep watch on the movements of the French till the 25th, when she sailed for New York. On 19 October she sailed again with the fleet, and on the 23rd was stationed ahead as a look-out (Pearl's Log). She returned to England in 1782. Parker: 84b.
