The title references the founding of the colony of Port Jackson in 1788 but the findings of George Vancouver in the American North West (1791-95) and George Bass and Matthew Flinders (1798-9), including the Bass Strait separating Tasman from the mainland, are lacking.

Map published originally as part of 'Charts and Plates to La Perouse's Voyage' (1798). The voyages of Lapérouse (1741-88?) covered much of the Pacific region, and are here marked onto the map. He is last recorded in Botany Bay, Australia, after which he and his ships disappeared. The map shows that much of Australia and Tasmania was yet to be charted.

In a room filled with bales, chests, and plunder the Conyngham family prepare to depart. Lord Conyngham, in shirt-sleeves but elegant, tugs at the cord of an enormous bundle. Lady Conyngham struggles with the lock of a treasure-chest. Her daughter carries on her shoulder the skeleton of George IV famous giraffe which had died in 1829. A cupboard topped with the Royal Arms displays bare shelves; plate is heaped on the floor. Following George IV's death the Conynghams left Windsor immediately having been bequeathed the king's plate and jewels.

George Packwood was a middle-class businessman with a product and a desire to get rich. In 1794 he published his an advertisement for his razor strop and paste in the London Times. Like all good advertisers, he knew that repetition was essential if he wanted to attract public attention. His first target was London coffeehouses and the middle- to upper-class men who frequented them. As his business and his name grew, Packwood expanded his advertising efforts to country newspapers. He eventually captured markets in all the cites and large fashionable towns of Great Britain. Packwood made a show of his outrageous, original, and ever-changing attempts to capture public attention. He believed that his advertisements had entertainment as well as commercial value, and to illustrate this he published a compilation of his advertisements "Packwood's Whim: The Goldfinch's Nest; or the Way to Get Money and Be Happy", this booklet was a shameless attempt to glorify Packwood, both for his razor strops and his advertising prowess. This frontice shows his tactic of suprising his customers with packaged, spherical, yellow balls of paste in circular boxes that resembled, upon Packwood's suggestion, the nest of a goldfinch.

From Pickett's 1812 book of 'Ninety-Six Speciments of Cottages-Bridges-Castles-Churches [...] Intended to facilitate the Improvement of the Student, and to aid the Practitioner, in Landscape Composition'. Aside from its function as an educational volume, the scenes in the book also provide many unusual views of London in the early 19th century.

A passenger boat service operated between Paddington and Uxbridge. The Paddington Packet Boat service was let out, initially to a Henry Weeks, using wide beamed boats. After six months trial it was decided to switch to narrow beamed boats to solve problems of scouring, i.e. damage to the canal. The contract was let to Thomas Homer - who was later to instigate the Regent's Canal - for two years in 1802 at a charge of £750 per year for what we would today call a franchise. The packet boat crews were noted for their smart crews wearing blue uniforms with yellow capes and yellow buttons. The Paddington packet seems to have been a well used passenger service which continued for a number of years. The Grand Junction was a busy route throughout its commercial life, although the struggle of competition with the railways was a constant problem from the mid 19th Century onwards.

Buffaloes ploughing a paddy field, a woman and child watching. Charles William Cain (1893-1962) travelled in the Middle East, and lived in Baghdad for some years. A student of Camberwell School of Art, he was then an illustrator and cartoonist for the Johannesburg Star. During the Great War, he served with the Border Regiment in India and Mesopotamia until the Armistice. In 1920-21, he studied at the Royal College of Art under Frank Short.

The padlock. To be. Or not to be. A queen! is the question

Satire on the suspected marriage of the Prince of Wales (1762-1830) to Maria Anne Fitzherbert (1756-1837). The scene depicts a country churchyard beside a Gothic church. Mrs. Fitzherbert leads the Prince toward the church, holding a riding-switch and a padlocked chain, urging him, ''Oh! fie my dear, let's go unto the Alter; And then you know our conscience cannot falter.'' The Prince pauses at a gravestone, replying, '''Twas there the famous Catherine W-----… Yielded their breath: let's do so too.'' The stone bears an inscription recalling Tom Stitch and Kitty W., who ''Four times died," an allusion to the trial for rape of a Brighton tailor. The Prince’s companions spy on the couple from behind tombstones. Weltje (1745-1810) kneels in the right foreground, while Fox (1749-1806) and Hanger (1751-1824) peer from behind a tomb on the left, remarking, ''Will they stop in the Porch'' and ''And follow the Taylors Example.'' Nearby, North (1732–92) sleeps against a stone reading ''He is not Dead But Sleepeth here.'' Another rider hides among the distant graves. The title alludes to Bickerstaffe’s comic opera 'The Padlock.'

A scene from 'The Padlock', a two-act opera by Charles Dibden and Isaac Bickerstaffe, first staged 1765. It depicts Leonora with a bird tethered to her finger, to which she sings. The opera was a great success and is best known for the character Mungo, a black servant from the West Indies, who was played by Dibden in blackface for the premier.

A view of the Basilica of Saint Anthony of Padua, a Roman Catholic church and minor basilica in Padua, northern Italy. Although the Basilica is visited as a place of pilgrimage by people from all over the world, it is not the principal cathedral of the city, a title belonging to the Cathedral-Basilica of St. Mary of Padua. To the right is the Equestrian Statue of Gattamelata by Italian early Renaissance artist Donatello, dating from 1453. It portrays the Renaissance condottiero Erasmo da Narni, known as 'Gattamelata', who served mostly under the Republic of Venice, which ruled Padua at the time.

A scene from the letters of Pliny the Younger: Caecina Paetus, having received an order to commit suicide for his part in a rebellion against Emperor Claudius, cannot bring himself to do it. His wife, Arria, stabs herelf and tries to hand her husband the dagger, telling him that it didn't hurt. Pliny heard the story from Arria's granddaughter, Fannia. The scene was engraved by Valentine Green after American painter Benjamin West (1738-1820), and dedicated to Yekaterina Vorontsova-Dashkova (1743-1810), a close friend of Catherine the Great, who was created a Director of the Imperial Academy of Arts and Sciences on her return to Russia in 1782. Originally published by Green in 1781, this is a later state unrecored by Whitman.

Rare lithograph, sheet 385 x 255mm (15¼ x 11¼"). Trimmed;
Niccolo Paganini (1784 - 1840), Italian violinist widely acknowledged as the greatest of all virtuosi on the instrument. He embarked on a tour of Europe in 1829, reaching London in 1834 where he played to rapturous crowds. Plagued by ill-health, which he treated with mercury and opium, Paganini's gaunt appearance appealed to the romantic sensibilities of his audiences. He was best-known for his virtuoso playing but also composed music, mostly to showcase his instrumental abilities. Large portrait after Edouard Pingret (1788-1875), French painter and lithographer of portraits, genre scenes and historical subjects who studied under David. From 1850 to 1855 he worked in Mexico City, making a significant contribution to 19th century Mexican art.

The door plaque reads 'Mrs Tickle Dressmaker'. A copy of a satire published by McLean in 1834, 'The Rival Scraper'; as this version has a different title it loses the joke.

Niccolo Paganini (1784 - 1840), Italian violinist. Paganini established himself as Italy's greatest violinist in solo performances between 1810 and 1828. He embarked on a tour of Europe in 1829, reaching London in 1834 where he played to rapturous crowds. Plagued by ill-health, which he treated with mercury and opium, Paganini's gaunt appearance appealed to the romantic sensibilities of his audiences. He was known for his virtuoso playing but also composed music, mostly for his own use.

Portrait of the virtuoso Niccolò (or Nicolò) Paganini (1782 - 1840). The date and location refer to his first appearance in England, after a marathon tour of all the major cities in Europe which lasted from 1828 into early 1831. Paganini is shown standing at the front of the stage with his violin, whilst Robert Lindley, Nicolas Mori and Dragonetti straining to see round the front, to try and see what was going on. Orpheus was a legendary musician, poet and prophet in Greek mythology, considered the best of the best.
