A View of the First Bridge at Paddington, and the Accomodation Barge Going down the Grand Junction Canal to Uxbridge.
Published 12th September, 1801. by Laurie & Whittle, 53, Fleet Street, London.
Coloured aquatint. 275 x 415mm (10¾ x 16¼").
A passenger boat service operated between Paddington and Uxbridge. The Paddington Packet Boat service was let out, initially to a Henry Weeks, using wide beamed boats. After six months trial it was decided to switch to narrow beamed boats to solve problems of scouring, i.e. damage to the canal. The contract was let to Thomas Homer - who was later to instigate the Regent's Canal - for two years in 1802 at a charge of £750 per year for what we would today call a franchise. The packet boat crews were noted for their smart crews wearing blue uniforms with yellow capes and yellow buttons. The Paddington packet seems to have been a well used passenger service which continued for a number of years. The Grand Junction was a busy route throughout its commercial life, although the struggle of competition with the railways was a constant problem from the mid 19th Century onwards.

The padlock. To be. Or not to be. A queen! is the question
Published April the 3.rd 1786 by S. W. Fores at his Caracature Warehouse N.o 3 Piccadilly London.
Hand coloured etching, 18th century watermark, sheet 300 x 420mm (12 x 16½"). Surface dirt. Trimmed within plate on right. Small brown stains. Knicks to edges of paper.
Satire on the suspected marriage of the Prince of Wales (1762-1830) to Maria Anne Fitzherbert (1756-1837). The scene depicts a country churchyard beside a Gothic church. Mrs. Fitzherbert leads the Prince toward the church, holding a riding-switch and a padlocked chain, urging him, ''Oh! fie my dear, let's go unto the Alter; And then you know our conscience cannot falter.'' The Prince pauses at a gravestone, replying, '''Twas there the famous Catherine W-----… Yielded their breath: let's do so too.'' The stone bears an inscription recalling Tom Stitch and Kitty W., who ''Four times died," an allusion to the trial for rape of a Brighton tailor. The Prince’s companions spy on the couple from behind tombstones. Weltje (1745-1810) kneels in the right foreground, while Fox (1749-1806) and Hanger (1751-1824) peer from behind a tomb on the left, remarking, ''Will they stop in the Porch'' and ''And follow the Taylors Example.'' Nearby, North (1732–92) sleeps against a stone reading ''He is not Dead But Sleepeth here.'' Another rider hides among the distant graves. The title alludes to Bickerstaffe’s comic opera 'The Padlock.' BM Satires 6941.

Paganini
Peint à Bade par Ed. Pingret 1831. Maurin
Imp. lith. de Gihaut frères Editeurs
Rare lithograph, sheet 385 x 255mm (15¼ x 11¼"). Trimmed;
Niccolo Paganini (1784 - 1840), Italian violinist widely acknowledged as the greatest of all virtuosi on the instrument. He embarked on a tour of Europe in 1829, reaching London in 1834 where he played to rapturous crowds. Plagued by ill-health, which he treated with mercury and opium, Paganini's gaunt appearance appealed to the romantic sensibilities of his audiences. He was best-known for his virtuoso playing but also composed music, mostly to showcase his instrumental abilities. Large portrait after Edouard Pingret (1788-1875), French painter and lithographer of portraits, genre scenes and historical subjects who studied under David. From 1850 to 1855 he worked in Mexico City, making a significant contribution to 19th century Mexican art. For a smaller print made from the same Pingret portrait see ref. 31926.

William Page (1730-58), highwayman. Using his own map of the roads 20 miles around London, he would drive his carriage out, change his clothes for the robbery, then return to London as an image of respectability. After this robbery he returned to find his phæton and clothes had been stolen. Following the thieves to an inn, he threw his highwayman's clothes down a well, then burst in to accuse them of robbing him, although he did not press charges. Because of his use of disguises he was acquitted several times because witnesses could not recognise him. However he was eventually convicted at Rochester, for robbing Captain Farrington on Blackheath; the magistrate who sentenced him to death was Henry Fielding, the novelist. London, Published by J. Mitchell, Royal Library, 33, Old Bond St. C. Graf, Lith. to Her Majesty.
Lithograph on india paper, india 220 x 320mm. 8¾ x 12½". Margins trimmed.
Equestrian portrait of Henry William Paget, 1st Marquess of Anglesey (1768 - 1854), Field Marshal and Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland. As Lord Paget, Anglesey served with great distinction as cavalry commander under Sir John Moore during the retreat to Corunna in 1809, the 'Dunkirk' of the Peninsular war. He was prevented from serving under Wellington in the Peninsula by a scandal: he ran off with Wellington's brother Henry's wife Lady Charlotte Wellesley. Wellington, though, was happy to accept him as a subordinate for the Waterloo campaign, crushing a colleague who reminded him of Anglesey's reputation with: 'I'll take good care he don't run away with me: I don't care about anyone else.' From a series of portraits by Count Alfred Guillaume Gabriel d'Orsay (1801 - 1852), Paris-born artist and gentleman of fashion. His profile sketches of his contemporaries, to the number of 125, include among them nearly all the literary, artistic, and fashionable celebrities of that time. Not in O'Donoghue.

Published as the Act directs 1 Sep.r 1791 by C. Forster No.41 Poultry
Engraving, sheet 160 x 100mm (6¼ x 4"). Trimmed and tipped into album sheet.
Thomas Paine (1737-1809), author and revolutionary. A leading figure in the age of revolutions and an effective pamphleteer, Paine's works included 'Common Sense' (1776), which inspired people in the 'Thirteen Colonies' to declare and fight for independence from Great Britain; the hugely successful 'Rights of Man' (1791-2), which did much to restore credit to the French in Britain and America; and 'The Age of Reason' (1793), a trenchant attack on Christianity and all formal religions which stirred up hostility for many years afterwards (in 1888 Teddy Roosevelt described him as 'a filthy little atheist'). Engraved after a portrait by Charles Willson Peale (1741-1827), American painter and museum founder who served in the Pennsylvania militia and participated in radical politics during the Revolution. For another engraving of Paine from the same portrait by Peale see ref. 34441.
