A medical scene from the French Piedmont campaign (1537-8), in which the barber surgeon Ambroise Paré tends to the wounds of a 'Captain Rat'. His notes contained the famous quote "Je le pansai, Dieu le guérit" ("I bandaged him and God healed him"). Paré was a pioneer of battlefield surgery, reintroducing Roman techniques including using poultices instead of cauterising wounds with boiling oil and reintroduced the ligature of arteries instead of cauterization during amputations. In 1567, by experimenting on a condemned man, he proved that bezoar stones (the poisoning cure-all of the Harry Potter series) did not work. Wellcome Library no. 9993i.

WP. [Engraved by William Smith after Rosalba Carriera]
Published April 14 1773 & sold by Tho.s Pether Berwick, Street, Soho.
Rare mezzotint, title area uncleaned. 460 x 310mm (18 x 12¼), with large margins. Creasing in margins.
Head and shoulders portrait of a young man as Paris, a sheepskin over his shoulder, holding up an apple. The British Museum has a scratch letter proof before title, with the inscription 'W.Smith, Pupil to M. W. Pether Fecit'; it is possible that William Pether intended to put his name on the finished print, accounting for the 'WP' monogram on this example. As we can find only these two impressions it might never have been published. Smith's career was short, with plates dated 1773-6; it is said that in later life he became a stockbroker. See BM 1858,1113.23 for the proof. CS 5, describing the BM's proof, this state not listed.

Etching in contemporary hand colour, sheet 295 x 395mm. 11½ x 15½". Trimmed to plate; some spotting.
A dramatic depiction of the fire during the annual Foire Saint-Germain fair in Paris, 16 - 17 March 1762; townsfolk using buckets of water and pumps in an effort to douse the raging flames, and a monk praying lower left. Key below title. For a series of vues d’optiques, intended originally to be viewed through a convex lens. The devices, known variously as zograscopes, optical machines and peepshows, were a popular optical entertainment of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Vues d’optiques were rendered in high-key colour and dramatic linear perspective, which enhanced the illusion of three-dimensionality when viewed through the lens.
