Photogravure, 215 x 350mm
Three Otterhounds. July - From the Sportsman Calendar. Maud Alice Earl (1864-1943) was an eminent British-American canine painter. Her works are much enjoyed by dog enthusiasts and also accurately record many breeds. Earl was the born in London, the daughter of artist George Earl and his first wife Alice Beaumont Rawlins. Maud's profession was the continuation of a family tradition. George Earl, an avid sportsman and noted sporting painter, was his daughter's first teacher and had his daughter study the anatomy of her subjects, drawing dog, horse and human skeletons to improve her skill. She later said that her father's instruction had given her ability that set her apart from other dog painters. After her father's tutelage Maud went on to study at Royal Female School of Art (later incorporated into the Central School of Art). Earl became famous during the Victorian Era, a time when women were not expected to make their living at painting. Nevertheless, she developed a select clientele, including Royals amongst her patrons such as Queen Victoria and Queen Alexandra. Although evidently extremely successful in England, Earl felt that the world she knew had been destroyed by World War I and she emigrated to New York City in 1916. By this time her work had received wide international recognition and her popular images were published in a number of books and in print form. The Sportsman's Year featured twelve of Earl's works as engravings. Maud Earl died in New York in 1943 and is buried at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in Sleepy Hollow, New York.

Frontispiece to the Records and Proceedings of the Outinian Society. A view of the home of John Penn (1760–1834), grandson of William Penn, the founder of Pennsylvania. A fashionable crowd is lined up outside the house to attend a lecture by the Outinian Society. Originally named the 'Matrimonial Society', the group was founded by John Penn in 1817 with the aim of improving the domestic lives of married individuals. Its creation followed the publication of Penn's poem Marriage in the Monthly Magazine during the summer of 1815. According to the inscription, the Outinian Society held lectures "every Saturday throughout the [summer] season" of 1818. Although the society was composed of men, "marriageable ladies" were invited to attend these lectures, where they had the chance to meet and socialize with bachelors over tea. Additional lectures were held at Penn's Stoke Park estate and on tour across the country, until the society dissolved in 1825.

[n.d., first published c.1616, this impression later]
Engraving, with large margins, rare. Plate 120 x 70mm. 4¾ x 2¾".
Portrait of Sir Thomas Overbury (1571-1613), courtier and author, aged 32, half-length, with lace ruff, in an oval. The image is taken from a portrait in oils attributed to Marcus Gheeraerts (Oxford, Bodleian Library). Overbury was close to Robert Carr, Earl of Somerset, and when the possibility of a marriage between Carr and Frances Howard arose, Overbury made clear his opposition to the match. Having acquired a reputation as a troublemaker Overbury was offered an ambassadorship overseas to remove him from court, which he declined against the king's wishes. As a result he was imprisoned in the Tower, where he died some months later. It has been thought, although not conclusively proven, that Frances Howard attempted to have him poisoned.

Overschie.
Overschie.
Paul van Liender del. et fec.
[Dutch, probably Amsterdam, n.d., c.1770s.]
Etching, laid paper, 190 x 280mm. 7½ x 11". Trace of vertical crease through right side of plate; else a fine impression, with full margins. Uncut.
Overschie was a village in The Netherlands, and is now a neighbourhood of Rotterdam. In the foreground a ferry crosses the river, carrying a horse and three figures. By Paulus van Liender (1731 - 1797); this print was also published in Paris by Pierre François Basan, but this appears to be an Amsterdam issue. "Unlike many Dutch artists of the 1700s who remained attached to a style they developed at the outset of their career, Paulus van Liender's art continually evolved. His earliest works were traditional topographic views but by the 1780s he was producing distinctive forest interiors. " Getty.
