[n.d., first published c.1616, this impression later]
Engraving, with large margins, rare. Plate 120 x 70mm. 4¾ x 2¾".
Portrait of Sir Thomas Overbury (1571-1613), courtier and author, aged 32, half-length, with lace ruff, in an oval. The image is taken from a portrait in oils attributed to Marcus Gheeraerts (Oxford, Bodleian Library). Overbury was close to Robert Carr, Earl of Somerset, and when the possibility of a marriage between Carr and Frances Howard arose, Overbury made clear his opposition to the match. Having acquired a reputation as a troublemaker Overbury was offered an ambassadorship overseas to remove him from court, which he declined against the king's wishes. As a result he was imprisoned in the Tower, where he died some months later. It has been thought, although not conclusively proven, that Frances Howard attempted to have him poisoned.

Etching, laid paper, 190 x 280mm. 7½ x 11". Trace of vertical crease through right side of plate; else a fine impression, with full margins. Uncut.
Overschie was a village in The Netherlands, and is now a neighbourhood of Rotterdam. In the foreground a ferry crosses the river, carrying a horse and three figures. By Paulus van Liender (1731 - 1797); this print was also published in Paris by Pierre François Basan, but this appears to be an Amsterdam issue. "Unlike many Dutch artists of the 1700s who remained attached to a style they developed at the outset of their career, Paulus van Liender's art continually evolved. His earliest works were traditional topographic views but by the 1780s he was producing distinctive forest interiors. " Getty.

This portrait, showing him in wig and tab collar, is taken from a scarce mezzotint from c.1700. The History and Antiquities of the Colleges and Halls in the University of Oxford:
The History and Antiquities of the Colleges and Halls in the University of Oxford: by Anthony Wood. Now First Published in English, From the Original Manuscript in the Bodleian Library; with a Continuation to the Present Time: by the editor, John Gutch, M.A. Chaplain of All Couls' College.
Oxford, at the Clarendon Prees: Printed for the Editor. MDCCLXXXVI [1786].
First English Edition. 4to., original full calf, spine gilt in compartments, maroon calf gilt title label; pp. [xvi]+692. Large paper issue. Hinges cracked, bookplate pasted down, probably the Earl of Effingham.
Anthony Wood (1632-95), an antiquary, first published this book, the first history of the University in 1674, as 'Hist. and Antiq. of the Universitie of Oxon', although the text was in Latin. The following year David Loggan's 'Oxonia Illustrata' was issued, designed to complement Wood's history, with instructions on where to insert the plates in his text. This edition was based on a revised manuscript that Wood was still working on when he died, which he left to the Bodleian Library. Gutch published an appendix in 1790 and 'The History and Antiquities of the University of Oxford, in two books' (actually three volumes) in 1792 & 1796. John Gutch (1746-1831) held the post of Chaplain of All Souls for over sixty years, and was also made college librarian (1771), chaplain of Corpus Christi College (1778) and Registrar of the University (1797).
