Rare mezzotint. 430 x 550mm (17 x 21¾"), large margins. Collector's blind stamp of a bee, in lower margin. Repaired tears, central fold, month engraved in a ferrent style to the rest of the inscription.
An army of bears storm a hill defended by frogs with cannon, bayoneting and shooting some as others hop into a pond to escape. A rough translation of the Latin title is 'The host of frogs perish and their limbs, used to jumping, twitch on'. The BM has two examples, one matching this state, and another with a different title ('Im Belles Ferro Ceciderunt Igne Robusti') and joke signatures, from the Lennox-Boyd collection, as this example. The collector's stamp, a blind-stamped Napoleonic Bee, is that of William J. Latta of Philadelphia, a collector of Napolionic prints, who began his collection c.1880, sold it Anderson Galleries, New York, in four sales 1913-4. Lugt (L.2825) says of the collection that it ''was reputed to be the most beautiful of its kind in the world. The portraits were remarkable for the beauty of the prints and the rarity of the states; the series of caricatures was particularly comprehensive''.

Associated with the seventh of the nine Cape Frontier Wars (1846-1847), known as the 'war of the axe'. Like the six previous wars, it was between the Xhosa people and European settlers. The Xhosa forces were far greater than those of the imperial British troops, and by this time they had replaced their traditional weapons with modern firearms. It was their new use of guns that made the Xhosa considerably more effective in fighting the British. On 28 May, a force of 8,000 Xhosa attacked the last remaining British garrison, at Fort Peddie, but fell back after a long shootout with British and Fengu troops. The Xhosa army then marched on Grahamstown itself, but was held up when a sizeable army of Ndlambe Xhosa were defeated on 7 June 1846 by General Somerset on the Gwangu, a few miles from Fort Peddie. One of a set of five colour plates by Harris after Martins - 'Kaffir Wars'.

The Battle of Navarino (20 October 1827) was a naval battle during the Greek War of Independence in Navarino Bay in the Ionian Sea. A combined force of Ottoman and Egyptian power engaged in battle with a combined British, French and Russian naval force that saw the Ottoman and Egyptian armada destroyed. It was notable for being the last major naval battle in history to be fought entirely with sailing ships.

The outline of the English coast is shown from the Isle of Wight east to Beachy Head (Bevesier), with Portsmouth, Arundel and Newhaven., with a key of the ships. The battle pitched Lieutenant-Admiral Maarten Tromp against Admiral Robert Blake in the English Channel. Despite Tromp withdrawing before Blake could commence a fourth day of action and Blake's capture of between 20-40 Dutch merchantmen and at least eight Dutch warships, both sides claimed victory. The Battle of Prague, fought on the 6th of May 1757 between the Prussian Army, commanded by ye King & Marshall Schwerin, & the Austrian Army, commanded by Marshal Brown. The King of Prussia entered Bohemia, and was joined by Marshal Schwerin on the 5th of May 1757, when his Armyu consisted of 80,000 Men, with which he attacked & defeated the whole combined Austrian Force, amounting to 100,000 Men, commanded bu Marshall Brown, This memorable Battle was fought near Prague, on the 6th of May. The Austrians were posted in a Campo almost inaccessible. The Prussians had Morasses to pass, Precipices to climb, and Batteries to face: but the Presence of the King animated his Troops, who attacked the Austrian Camp; and after a very long and obstinate Engagement, and many signal Examples of Valour, obtained a most glorious & Decisive Victory. The Austrians abandoned the Field of Battle, leaving behind them 240 Canon, all their Baggage, and Tents, They had 20,000 Men killed and wounded; and 10,000 taken Prisoners. The Prussians lost only 4000 Men but Marshal Schwerin fell amoung the Slain. The left Wing of the Austrian Army fled into Prague, where Marshal Brown died of his Wounds; and the Rest of the Austrians retired towards Moravia. His Prussian Majesty immediatley invested and besieged Prague, which was soon relieved by Marshal Daun. Reference. The Battle of Rosbach, in Saxony, fought on the 5th of November 1757, between the Prussian Army, commanded by the King, and the combined Army of Imperialists and French, commanded by the Prince of Saxe Hilburghausen and the Prince of Soubise. His Prussian Majesty marched against the comfined Army on the 27th of October, and the two Armies met near the Village of Rosbach, between Mersebury and Freyburg, on the 5th November, The combined Army consisted of 60,000 men and the Pussians were only 25,000. The Prussians gained the rising Grounds, and began the Attack about half an Hour after Two in the Afternoon. The Prussian Cavalry soon entirely routed that of the Enemy whose Infantry was then attacked and defeated by that of the Purssians. The Battle lasted about an Hour and half, and the combined Army fled on all sides before five, The Fugitives were favoured by the Night, which gave them an Opportunity of retiring towards Freyburg, and afterwards over the Unstrut to Erfert, where they were pursued till the 9th The combined Army had 3000 Men killed on the Field of Battle, and upwards of 6000 were taken Prisoners, amoung whom were 8 French generals and 250 Officers of Different Ranks: they also lost 63 Cannon, 15 Standards, 7 Paiof Colours, and 300 Baggage Waggons. The Prussians had only 100 Men killed, and 300 wounded.~Posterity will scarce credit this Victory, whereby Savony was continued in the Possession of his Prussian Majesty, who then marched into Silesia and defeated Prince Charles of Lorrain at Neumark, on the 5th of December, which gave the King the entire Possession of Silesia. A follow on from the riot that began at temple bar; numerous merchants, bankers, and others, set out from the City, to present an address, opposing Wilkes, to the King at St James's, but on arriving they were confronted by a threatening mob who closed the gates by force, and thus prevented the deputation from proceeding. Some more determined opponents to Wilkes managed to get through to the Palace and present their address, but not without difficulty and it was with this that the palace had to call out the troops.

Before the son went into independent practice, the two worked together and both were founder-members of what became the RIBA. He designed some large country houses, including one for the exiled Empress Eugénie at Farnborough, Hampshire, as well as parsonages, schools (on which he produced a book of designs) and churches. Among these was the chapel of the County Lunatic Asylum, later St Francis Mental Hospital, near Haywards Heath. He was District Surveyor for Hampstead from 1844 and in his final years was assisted by his nephew, Frederick Mew.
