JMW Turner [facsimile signature].
JMW Turner [facsimile signature].
Engraved & Etched by Yours Truly.
London, Published March 8th 1881 by B. Brooks & Sons, 171, Strand
Stipple engraving on india. Plate 253 x 171mm. 10 x 6¾". Staining on right.
Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775-1851) in his studio, with several paintings visible including his famous 'Shipwreck' of 1805 (London, Tate Gallery) resting on a chair. In the top left can be seen part of what may be his 'Eruption of the Soufriere Mountains in the Island of St Vincent, 30th April 1812' (University of Liverpool Art Gallery). Contrary to the legend belowthe print, Turner himself had no hand in this print. It was engraved by his namesake Charles Turner after Count Alfred D'Orsay and published in 1852, shortly after Turner's death (see NPG D6997). This is a later republication after the text had been changed. Turner was unarguably one of Britain's most famous and innovative artists. He elevated landscape painting to an eminence rivalling history painter, his work regarded as a Romantic preface to Impressionism.
See ref. 21939 for another portrait of Turner after D'Orsay in a similar pose, but with different background.
