A view of St John of Acre (now Akka, Israel) from the sea, with HMS Le Tigre seen in the foreground. The draughtsman F.B. Spilsbury was a surgeon on board Le Tigre, which together with the H.M.S. Theseus, under the command of Commodore Sir Sydney Smith, was sent on a naval mission to the Holy Land and Syria. This operation was launched as part of the overall mission to counter the military campaigns of Napoleon in the Middle East in 1799 and 1800. Spilsbury's original on-site sketches of famous sites and local peoples were redrawn in London by Daniel Orme and reproduced in printed form, as here.

A very rudimentary plan showing a fleet of European warships bombarding a city with Turkish defenders, who are shown within the battlements using heavy canon to protect the fortified port. The Europeans appear to be worse off, with one ship sinking and another on fire. The Turks seem unperturbed, and none of the city is damaged. In the interior is a sketch of a steam engine in profile.

Unusual portrait of a woman holding spectacles in her left hand, while in her right holding a book open to show a portrait of a young woman. The sitter is probably the daughter of the successful Suffolk landowner Nathaniel Lee Acton (1725-95), who, along with other members of his family, was painted by Gainsborough. The artist A.M. Kersey has not been identified.

William Adam (1751-1839), Scottish barrister, politician and judge. He was the son of architect John Adam and nephew of Robert and James Adam. Through his friendship with the Prince of Wales William received the posts of Solicitor General for Scotland (1802-5), Attorney General to the Prince (1805-6), Chancellor of the Duchy of Cornwall (1806-15), Baron of the Scottish Court of Exchequer (1814-9), Privy Councillor (1815) and Lord Chief Commissioner of the Scottish jury court from 1815 until his death. Adam once shot Charles James Fox in a duel, although they became friends afterwards.

William Adam (1751-1839), Scottish barrister, politician and judge. He was the son of architect John Adam and nephew of Robert and James Adam. Through his friendship with the Prince of Wales William received the posts of Solicitor General for Scotland (1802-5), Attorney General to the Prince (1805-6), Chancellor of the Duchy of Cornwall (1806-15), Baron of the Scottish Court of Exchequer (1814-9), Privy Councillor (1815) and Lord Chief Commissioner of the Scottish jury court from 1815 until his death. Adam once shot Charles James Fox in a duel, although they became friends afterwards.

Commander.- This fine ship was out-ward bound from London for China, and was driven on shore by a heavy gale, near Eastbourne, Sussex on Sunday morning, the 3rd February, 1822. Her Extensive Cargo was taken out without loss [excepting damage by water] under the direction and management of Mr. J. B.Stone, of New Haven, Agent to Lloyd's. She lay in this situation from the 3d of February to the 22d, when she was got off, to the great gratification of many thousands of Spectators, she was then conducted away for Deptford, by two Steam Vessels, which were in attendance for that purpose. She arrived safe at Deptford, on the 24th of February, with a prospect of being speedily repaired to proceed onto her original destination.
