A deputy to the States-General, his liberal views were suspected of cloaking an ambition to become constitutional monarch, and as the revolution progressed he lost the confidence of both republicans and royalists. After exchanging his title for the name Citizen Égalité, he was elected to the National Convention in September 1792 and voted for the execution of King Louis XVI but was himself arrested and guillotined during the Reign of Terror in 1793. Louis Philippe (6 October 1773 -26 August 1850) was King of the French from 1830 to 1848 in what was known as the July Monarchy. He was the last king to rule France. Louis Phillippe ruled in an unpretentious fashion, avoiding the pomp and lavish spending of his predecessors. Despite this outward appearance of simplicity, his support came from the wealthy middle classes. At first, he was much loved and called the "Citizen King" and the "bourgeois monarch," but his popularity suffered as his government was perceived as increasingly conservative and monarchical. Under his management the conditions of the working classes deteriorated, and the income gap widened considerably. An economic crisis in 1847 led to the citizens of France revolting against their king again the following year. On February 24, 1848, during the February 1848 Revolution, to general surprise, King Louis Philippe abdicated in favor of his nine-year-old grandson, Philippe. Fearful of what had happened to Louis XVI, Louis Philippe quickly disguised himself and fled Paris. Riding in an ordinary cab under the name of "Mr. Smith", he escaped to England. According to The Times of March 6, 1848, the King and Queen were received at Newhaven, East Sussex before travelling by train to London. The National Assembly initially planned to accept young Philippe as king, but the strong current of public opinion rejected that. On February 26, the Second Republic was proclaimed. Prince Louis Napoleon Bonaparte was elected President in December; a few years later he declared himself president for life and then Emperor Napoleon III. Louis Philippe and his family lived in England until his death in Claremont, Surrey. He is buried with his wife, Amelia (April 26, 1782-March 24, 1866), at the Chapelle Royale, the family necropolis he had built in 1816, in Dreux.

[after Edward Stanley.]
[n.d. c.1825.]
Coloured lithograph on card. 196 x 252mm (7¾ x 10").
An owl sits upon a green perch, staring at a man who sits behind him on a green stool with the same tufted ears of the owl, bent over hand like talons and a coat that represents the tail. See Ref: 37175 for complete set. From a collection of Six amateur caricatures, drawn by Edward Stanley (1779-1849), who served as Bishop of Norwich 1837-1849. At the time of publication he was rector of Alderley, Cheshire, a position he held for 32 years. This and the two other satires he produced ('Bustle’s Banquet' & 'Dinner of the Dogs') were probably published locally, accounting for the absence of these caricatures in our national collections. His authorship is only confirmed by the 1907 publication of his collected letters.

Engraving. Sheet: 530 x 370mm (21 x 14½"), mid-18th century watermark. Damaged and trimmed within plate.
A portrait of the mythological figure Orpheus who was said to be able to tame the animals with his music. The engraving is taken from a 1618 mosiac in the Villa Borghese by the artist Marcello Provenzale (1595-1631) and might have been a portrait of Cardinal Scipione Borghese (1577-1633) himself. Whilst Orpheus is traditionally plays a lyre Borghese is depicted playing the popular violin which had been developed in Italy during the 16th century. Borghese is surrounded by domestic and exotic animals, including a dragon, and birds which he has bewitched with his music.
