Louis Philippe Joseph, duc d'Orleans, known as Philippe Égalité [1747 - 1793]. A deputy to the States-General, his liberal views were suspected of cloaking an ambition to become constitutional monarch, and as the revolution progressed he lost the confidence of both republicans and royalists. After exchanging his title for the name Citizen Égalité, he was elected to the National Convention in September 1792 and voted for the execution of King Louis XVI but was himself arrested and guillotined during the Reign of Terror in 1793. His son became King Louis Philippe.

Line engraving. 617 x 485mm. 24¼" x 19".
Louis Philippe (6 October 1773 -26 August 1850) was King of the French from 1830 to 1848 in what was known as the July Monarchy. He was the last king to rule France. Louis Phillippe ruled in an unpretentious fashion, avoiding the pomp and lavish spending of his predecessors. Despite this outward appearance of simplicity, his support came from the wealthy middle classes. At first, he was much loved and called the "Citizen King" and the "bourgeois monarch," but his popularity suffered as his government was perceived as increasingly conservative and monarchical. Under his management the conditions of the working classes deteriorated, and the income gap widened considerably. An economic crisis in 1847 led to the citizens of France revolting against their king again the following year. On February 24, 1848, during the February 1848 Revolution, to general surprise, King Louis Philippe abdicated in favor of his nine-year-old grandson, Philippe. Fearful of what had happened to Louis XVI, Louis Philippe quickly disguised himself and fled Paris. Riding in an ordinary cab under the name of "Mr. Smith", he escaped to England. According to The Times of March 6, 1848, the King and Queen were received at Newhaven, East Sussex before travelling by train to London. The National Assembly initially planned to accept young Philippe as king, but the strong current of public opinion rejected that. On February 26, the Second Republic was proclaimed. Prince Louis Napoleon Bonaparte was elected President in December; a few years later he declared himself president for life and then Emperor Napoleon III. Louis Philippe and his family lived in England until his death in Claremont, Surrey. He is buried with his wife, Amelia (April 26, 1782-March 24, 1866), at the Chapelle Royale, the family necropolis he had built in 1816, in Dreux.

The English landscape garden, also called English landscape park or simply the English garden, is a style of "landscape" garden which emerged in England in the early 18th century, and spread across Europe, replacing the more formal, symmetrical jardin à la française of the 17th century as the principal gardening style of Europe. Ornithology. Well! If ever I saw such a love of an Owl before, in all my life!
[after Edward Stanley.]
[n.d. c.1825.]
Coloured lithograph on card. 196 x 252mm (7¾ x 10").
An owl sits upon a green perch, staring at a man who sits behind him on a green stool with the same tufted ears of the owl, bent over hand like talons and a coat that represents the tail. See Ref: 37175 for complete set. From a collection of Six amateur caricatures, drawn by Edward Stanley (1779-1849), who served as Bishop of Norwich 1837-1849. At the time of publication he was rector of Alderley, Cheshire, a position he held for 32 years. This and the two other satires he produced ('Bustle’s Banquet' & 'Dinner of the Dogs') were probably published locally, accounting for the absence of these caricatures in our national collections. His authorship is only confirmed by the 1907 publication of his collected letters.

Abraham Ortelius [1527 - 1598] was a cartographer and geographer, generally recognised as the creator of the first modern atlas, the 'Theatrum Orbis Terrarum'. This etching served as a kind of frontispiece to the volume, first issued in 1570, with three Latin editions (besides a Flemish, a French and a German edition) appearing by 1572. Several others were published subsequently, for the atlas continued to be in demand till about 1612.

William Osborn (1736-1808), man-midwife. After practicing as a surgeon for some years, he was elected man-midwife to the lying-in hospital in Bloomsbury, London. He set up a private school of midwifery with Thomas Denman, and they taught together from 1770 until they parted company in 1782 (the two were believed to have educated more than 1200 practitioners of midwifery). Osborn also published widely on the subject, and the sheet of paper he holds here is probably intended to represent one of his manuscripts.

View of the Royal residence Osborne House on the Isle of Wight. Prince Albert designed the house himself in conjunction with Thomas Cubitt, the London architect and builder whose company also built the main façade of Buckingham Palace. The sale of the Royal Pavilion at Brighton paid for much of the new house's furnishings. The Stationers' Company had published the Stationers' Almanack since 1747, a single-sheet illustrated calendar that recorded significant events of the preceding year.

Portrait of Thomas Osborne, Duke of Leeds, bust to left in an oval on pedestal, wearing a wig; third state. His success in stabilizing the government's financial position secured him a position as Charles II's chief minister and the title of Earl of Danby in 1674. He played a key role in bringing William and Mary to the throne in 1689, and his influence declined when he was impeached in 1695 for taking a bribe from the East India Company.

[n.d. c.1690.]
Fine engraving, with large margins. Plate 255 x 178mm. 10 x 7". Small tear in margin to left.
Thomas Osborne (1631-1712) was 1st Duke of Leeds and a statesman who was created Earl of Danby in 1674. He served as Lord High Treasurer from 1673 to 1679, and strove successfully but unscrupulously to balance the royal finances. He was impeached and imprisoned between 1679 and 1684 following the discovery that his anti-French policy in Parliament was belied by secret pro-French treaties. He later opposed the policies of James II, and was honoured and appointed Lord President of the Council by William III between 1689 and 1699, but then faced another attempted impeachment in 1695 for receiving bribes.
