A very rare subscriber's issue of part 4 of a publication that would be eventually published as ''Bath, Illustrated by A Series of Views, from the Drawings of John Claude Nattes; with Description to each Plate'. Abbey writes that ''The comparative scarcity of the book would appear to argue for a limited circulation''; he does not mention this earlier title or list any publication with plates of Bristol, Malvern, Cheltenham or Weymouth by Nattes. The plates (which tally with the order of the book, but one number less due to the inclusion of the vignette on the title page) are: 'Sidney Hotel &c', aquatinted by John Hill; 'The Bridges over the Canal in Sidney Gardens' by F.C. Lewis; 'Old Bridge' by Hill; & 'Pump-Room' by Hill.

On his retirement in 1820 as a lawyer and conveyancer, Fletcher Partis and his wife Ann planned to open a home for distressed gentlewomen. Only six weeks after buying a property Fletcher died, leaving Ann to become Founder and Benefactor of the college in 1825. It consists of thirty terraced houses set around three sides of a quadrangle, with a chapel in the centre of the middle block, redesigned by Gilbert Scott in 1862. It continues its work today.

Two women in a rowing boat. One is fully nude about to dive into the water while the other holds the oars. Nathaniel Long (1893-1955), book and magazine illustrator and printmaker who specialized in eroticised female etching. In 1948 he illustrated editions of both 'Tom Brown's Schooldays' and 'The Coral Island'.

A portrait of British politician Henry Bathurst, 3rd Earl Bathurst (1762 - 1834), half-length, seated to the left, facing the viewer Lord Bathurst was member of the British Parliament for Cirencester from 1783 until he succeeded to the earldom in August 1794. Owing mainly to his friendship with William Pitt, he was a lord of the admiralty from 1783 to 1789, a lord of the treasury from 1789 to 1791, and commissioner of the board of control from 1793 to 1802.

Caricature of Henry Bathurst, 2nd Earl Bathurst (1714 - 1794). His hands are thrust into his waistcoat; he wears a tie-wig and sword. He has an almost imbecile expression. Known as the Lord Apsley from 1771 to 1775, Bathurst was Lord Chancellor from 1771 to 1778. By James Sayers (1748 - 1823). Sayers's caricatures were so powerful and direct in their purpose that Fox is said to have declared that they did him more harm than all the attacks made on him in parliament or the press. Numbered 'XVII' upper left. The publisher Charles Bretherton (c.1760 fl - 1783) was the younger brother of James Bretherton.

Dr Ralph Bathusrt (1620-1704) was an English theologian and physician. He was ordained in 1644 but his prospects were disrupted by the English Civil War and he turned to medicine. He was part of the original group of Oxford experimentalists attached to the Royal Society of London, and later crossed circles with physicians and was involved in the dissection of Ann Green. During the First Anglo-Dutch War of 1652, he worked in practical medicine alongside Daniel Whistle, who was in charge of wounded naval personnel. In 1660, with the English Restoration, he turned back to the Church, and in 1663 he was elected Fellow of the Royal Society, and a year later was made President of Trinity College. In 1670 he was Dean of Wells Cathedral and for three years, from 1673, he was Vice-Chancellor of the University of Oxford.

The Reverend Joseph Hallett Batten (died October 11, 1837) was principal of the East India Company College. John Linnel was an English painter who made a good living as a fashionable portraitist, but preferred to paint landscapes. He gave up portraiture in the 1840's and moved to Redhill to devote his career to his landscapes. These paintings were highly desired and caused Linnel to amass a great deal of wealth. However, he was not favored among his colleagues and was denied membership to the Royal Academy.

Plate 9 from Joseph Farington's (1747 - 1821) 'History of the River Thames', 1794, a two-volume publication including 76 aquatints. An exceptional panoramic view with figures and horses in a field in the foreground, and a coach passing in the centre. The Thames is winding in the middle distance to a bridge on the left with a view of London in the background, Battersea in the centre, Chelsea on the left, and St Paul's Cathedral on the horizon. The view is taken from the West Hill Estate, Wandsworth, first purchased, as part of the demesne of the manor of Downe, from the Duke of Bedford in 1759. John Anthony Rucker, a merchant originally from Hamburg, bought the estate in 1789, and all later owners added to the lands by purchase.

A fine view on the river at Battersea; the church on the right; in right foreground boats grouped around pier; Chelsea in distance on the left. From "A Collection of One Hundred Views In England and Wales". John Boydell's 'Collection of Views' was made after he turned from engraver to print publisher in 1767. The first collection was issued in 1770, and included some plates by printmakers other than himself.

A cavalry battle, with the riders firing pistols, drawn and engraved by Claude Simonin (c.1635-1721), an engraver and designer of ornamental gunfittings. It was published in 'Plusieurs Pieces et Ornements Darquebuzerie', a collection of designs for ornamental fittings on guns. Originally published in 1684 as a set of eight plates, an enlarged edition of 13 plates was published by Parisian gunmaker Laurent le Languedoc in 1705. Another expanded edition was published about 1776 by Gilles-Antoine Demarteau (this plate without the privilege, as per Metropolitan Museum 2011.310.1–.13). On the reverse is Moncornet's portrait of 'Henry Duc de la Trémoille et de Thouars Pair de France'.

The Capture Of Atlanta, Georgia, Sep.t 2.D 1864. By the Union Army, under Major Gen.l Sherman. On the 30.th August, the Union Army, by the masterly strategy of Gen.l Sherman, made a rapid flank movement, cutting the Rail Road south of the City, attacking the rebels at Jonesboro, and capturing their guns and defences there. Hood, the rebel commander, finding himself completely outgeneraled, set fire to his stores, blew up his magazines, and "skedaddled." Gen.Slocum with the 20th Corps occupied the place and thus in the thrilling words of Sherman, "Atlanta is ours and fairly won.!!

Also shows an infantry man nursing his ankle in the foreground and the ammunitions store on fire in the middle of the city in the background. The Battle of Atlanta was a battle of the Atlanta Campaign fought during the American Civil War on July 22, 1864, just southeast of Atlanta, Georgia. Continuing their summer campaign to seize the important rail and supply hub of Atlanta, Union forces commanded by William Tecumseh Sherman (1820 –91) overwhelmed and defeated Confederate forces defending the city under John Bell Hood (1831–79). Currier and Ives was a New York City printmaking business that operated between 1835 and 1907. Founded by Nathaniel Currier (1813 –88), the company designed and sold inexpensive, hand painted lithographic works based on news events, views of popular culture and Americana.
