A view of the prophylaea (gateway) of the Hippodrome, Thessaloniki, with a private house built through it, published in the 'Antiquities of Athens and Other Monuments of Greece' by James 'Athenian' Stuart & Nicholas Revett. Stuart (1713-88) and Revett (1720-1804) joined Gavin Hamillton and Matthew Brettingham on a Grand Tour of Italy, the Balkans & Greece between 1748-55. On their return they started work on the 'Antiquities', which was the first accurate survey of the surviving classical buildings of Athens, with the first volume published in 1762, the second 1789, third 1794, fourth 1816 and fifth 1830 (nearly 80 years after the first). The work was incredibly influential, fueling the Greek revivalist style in 18th-century English architecture. The attention to detail was such that it attracted the attention of Hogarth, who satirised the work with his 'Five Orders of Periwig'.
Stuart's gouache of the building is in the Victoria and Albert Museum, RIBA Library Drawings Collection, SD146/3.

The tower of San Roque in Lisbon after its destruction in the Lisbon earthquake of 1755. The Great Lisbon Earthquake took place on November 1, 1755 at around 9:40 in the morning. The earthquake was followed by a tsunami and fire, which caused near-total destruction of the city and adjoining areas. Estimates place the death toll between 60,000 to 100,000 people, making it one of the most destructive earthquakes in history. The earthquake accentuated political tensions in Portugal and profoundly disrupted the country's eighteenth century colonial ambitions. The event was widely discussed and dwelt upon by European Enlightenment philosophers, and inspired major developments in theodicy and in the philosophy of the sublime. As the first earthquake studied scientifically for its effects over a large area, it led to the birth of modern seismology. Plate 1 from a series consisting of a titleplate and six views, 'Recueil des plus belles ruines de Lisbonne causées par le tremblement et par le feu du premier Novembre 1755'. The artists, MM. Paris and Pedegache were probably amateur local artists. The series was advertised by Le Bas in the 'Mercure de France' in March 1758 at the price of 12 livres on grand papier de chapelet, and 10 livres on grand raisin. A set of six piracies of the views was published by Robert Sayer in London (see 7971).

St. Effisius [Sardinia]
St. Effisius [Sardinia]
M.A.T.W. [Mary Anne Theresa Whitby] Newlands Press [c.1828]
Lithograph, very rare with large margins; printed area 95 x 140mm (3¾ x 5¾").
Carriage for transporting a sculpture of St. Effisius, a Greek warrior who became a Christian and celebrated in Cagliari, Sardinia on May 1. In 1828 William Henry Smyth published his 'Sketch of the present state of the island of Sardinia' in which he wrote of the procession celebrating St Effisius: 'The gorgeous carriage then slowly advances; it consists principally of fine plate-glass, and containing the image of the Saint surrounded with lighted candles [...] I remarked to an acquaintance, that everybody appeared to be much attached to St. Effisius; "Ah!", said he, "it is with great reason; he saved our city from a dreadful plague,- he gave us rain when every other part of the island suffered from drought,- and he frustrated the designs of the French in 1793.' The printmaker, Mary Anne Theresa Whitby (1784-1850), was married to Captain John Whitby, flag captain for Admiral Sir William Cornwallis. They lived on the admiral's estate, Newlands: after John's death in 1806, Mary stayed on, spending much of her time with Cornwallis, who left his estate to her on his death in 1819. Being a keen amateur lithographer, Whitby established a private press at Newlands, but she is better remembered for the first successful sericulture (silk production) to England after three centuries of attempts, presenting twenty yards of damask to Queen Victoria in 1844. She performed genetic experiments on her silkworms for Charles Darwin, who published her results in his 'The Variation of Animals and Plants Under Domestication' (1868).
