An Irish peer and M.P. for St. Mawes, he was nicknamed 'Squire Gawkey' and was also called "the old rat of the Constitution". By James Sayers (1748 - 1823). Sayers's caricatures were so powerful and direct in their purpose that Fox is said to have declared that they did him more harm than all the attacks made on him in parliament or the press. Very fine engraving. 495 x 361mm (19½ x 14¼"), large margins. Faint crease outside image.
Three-quarter length portrait of George Nugent-Temple-Grenville (1753-1813), 1st Marquess of Buckingham. As Lord Lieutenant of Ireland under Pitt, he was denounced by Grattan for extravagance and was censured by the Irish Houses of Parliament for refusing to transmit to England an address calling upon the Prince of Wales to assume the regency. He maintained his position by bribery for a time but resigned his office in September 1789. The engraver, John Keyes Sherwin (1751-1790), was a painter and engraver who succeeded Woollett as engraver to the king in 1785. Despite an income of more that £12,000 a year he died in penury in 1790 because, as the Encyclopedia Britannia describes him, he was "shiftless, indolent, and without method" and a reckless gambler. However the Encyclopedia also states that his portraits of Buckingham and Pitt (both after Gainsborough) "occupy a high place among the productions of the English school of line-engravers".

In Feburary 1784 the Pegnitz River flooded the city of Nuremberg, sweeping away houses. It was caused by the eruption of the Iclandic volcano Laki, not only spewing out basalt lava but also belching clouds of hydrofluoric acid and sulfur dioxide compounds into the air. The resulting clouds caused a mini ice-age, causing heavy snow falls and hail large enough to kill cattle in Europe and the Mississippi to freeze at New Orleans. The thaw of the extra snow in the spring caused floods throughout Europe. This view of the devastation was drawn by the engraver Johann Ludwig Stahl (1759-1818) who witnessed the catastrophe.

G.B. Cipriani invt. F. Bartolozzi sculpt.
London Pubd. as the Act directs March. 1 1787 by F. Bartolozzi.
Etching printed in sepia, platemark 260 x 200mm (10 x 8"), with very large margins.
Decorative nude scene. Etching by Francesco Bartolozzi (1725-1815), Florentine engraver and founding member of the Royal Academy in 1768. After meeting George III's librarian Richard Dalton in Italy in 1763, Dalton invited Bartolozzi to London with a promise of an appointment as engraver to the king. In England he became the most celebrated exponent of the 'stipple' technique whereby he produced prints using dots rather than lines. This is the medium employed here, one of many prints he made from designs by his fellow Italian, G.B. Cipriani (it was published in 'A Set of Etchings by Francis Bartolozzi R.A. in Imitation of Drawings from the Sketches of the Late John Baptist Cipriani R.A.' in 1788.
