Abraham van der Hulst, Dutch admiral [1619 - 1666]. He died in the 'Four Days Battle', a naval battle of the Second Anglo-Dutch War fought from 11 June to 14 June. It remains one of the longest naval engagements in history. Abraham van der Hulst commanded the ship the 'Spiegel' in the squadron of Lieutenant-Admiral Tromp. During the very fierce fighting, he was shot in the chest by a bullet.and died on June 12th.

Allegory of the death of William V, Prince of Orange, 1806. The Dutch Lady is weeping at the grave of the prince. She is comforted by an angel. On the grave is a portrait bust, the two cherubs bear arms. Right below the Dutch Lion, sleeping on broken arms. The painting is part of the Rijksmusuem collection. Jan Willem Pieneman (1779-1853) was born in Abcoude and was educated at the Amsterdam Stadstekenacademie. In 1805 he was appointed to teach drawing at the artillery and engineering college in Amersfoort. As an artist Pieneman acquired a name for his paintings of scenes from the contemporary history of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. But Pieneman fulfilled other functions besides that of painter: in 1820 he was appointed first director of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam and from 1844 to 1847 he was director of the Rijksmuseum, at that time still housed in Trippenhuis.

William IV, Prince of Orange-Nassau (1711-1751), the first hereditary Stadtholder of the Netherlands. After a portrait by Philip van Dijk (1680-1753), who painted William several times. This print appears to have been first published with verses in Dutch below, and the text subsequently replaced with one in English.

His time as Stadtholder included war with both England (1780-4) and France (1793-5) as a result of which he took refuge in England as the French overran Holland and the Stadtholderate was abolished. William received territories in compensation in 1802, but died before regaining possession of Holland.

It was founded in 1239 by monks of the austere Cistercian roder by was closed in 1539 by Henry VIII during the Dissolution of the Monasteries. Harry George Webb (1882-1914) was a landscape and architectural painter and etcher, who exhibited at the Royal Academy and the Royal Society of Etchers. He set up the Caradoc Press in Chiswick in 1899 with his wife Hesba.

An invitation to John Trevitt Nettleship's exhibition. Nettleship (1841-1902) was known as a painter of animals and in particular of lions. For twenty-seven years (1874-1901) he exhibited spacious oil pictures of lions, tigers and other wild beasts at the Royal Academy and for some times at the Grosvenor Gallery. This particular exhibition contained some 76 pastel works of wild beasts and birds of prey.

François de Neufville (1644-1730), 2nd Duke of Villeroy. As a life-long friend of Louix XIV, he was made Marshal of France in 1693 despite having no aptitude. He was beaten in battle by William III, Prince Eugene of Savoy and the Duke of Marlbrough (at Ramillies). He later became governor of the child King Louis XV.

A portrait of 14-years old arsonist Johann Christoph Neumann, sitting in a cell, chained around the waist. He was one of six people charged with planning an arson spree in a small community on the outskirts of Frankfurt an der Oder in May 1723, in which 84 buildings were destroyed. The other five, including his mother and sister, were killed and burnt; Johann was sentenced to ten years in Spandau Prison. From Johann Christian Wellman's 'Das Von der göttlichen Regierung An Denen Mord-Brennern, welche in der Nacht zwischen den 19. und 20. May 1723...'.

The Bethlem Royal Hospital of London (now located in Bromley, south east London), which has been variously known as St. Mary Bethlehem, Bethlem Hospital, Bethlehem Hospital and Bedlam, was one of Europe's first and most notorious psychiatric hospitals. The word Bedlam has long been used for lunatic asylums in general, and later for a scene of uproar and confusion. In 1815, Bedlam was moved to St George's Fields, Southwark, into buildings designed by Sydney Smirke now used to house the Imperial War Museum.

The titlepage and first plate of a book on ornamental designs by Angiolo Rosis (or Angelo, 1670-1742), with the title engraved within a roccoco design featuring an artist's palette, pen, set square, and pair of compasses. The plates were engraved from drawings found after Rosis's death, by Antonio Visentini (1688-1772) and first published by Francesco Zuccarelli in 1747.
