Bass Rock, or The Bass, is an island in the outer part of the Firth of Forth in the east of Scotland; it is famous as being home to a large colony of fowl, in particular gannets. Print promoting the Conservative candidate in the 1890 Bassetlaw by-election, Sir Frederick Milner. The by-election was caused by the death of the sitting Conservative MP, William Beckett-Denison. Milner is astride a calm horse inscribed 'Donovan', and receives advice and confidences from those around him. In the background is the Liberal candidate John William Mellor, whose horse is out of control and worries a nearby punter, who says 'He's Dangerous John. I'll write to Foljambe' (Foljambe, a former MP for the area, supported Milner's candidature. In the top left is 'Sir Frederick's Motto: Righteousness, Justice and Truth', with verses praising him below. Milner won the election, returning with a substantially increased Conservative majority.

A full length portrait of John Prideaux Basset (1740-56), dressed in Van Dyke costume, with a greyhound. He was the son of John Pendarves Basset (1713-39) of Tehidy Park, one of the richest men in Cornwall, who died before his birth. He too died young, aged sixteen while at Eton College. An elaborate funeral procession took him by foot from Slough to his family's vault at Illogan, Cornwall.

John Bastwick (1595?-1654), Puritan religious controversialist and pamphleteer. One of five bust portraits etched by Wenceslaus Hollar of writers punished for their opinions on the High Church policy of Laud. As recounted in the text here, in 1637 they were fined impossibly large sums, lost their ears, and sentenced to life imprisonment (although Bastwick, after a spell in Star Castle in the Isles of Scilly, was released in 1644). It was etched on the same plate as two of the other portraits; the copperplate, now cut, is in the Bodleian Library in Oxford. Hollar (1607-77) was a Bohemian printmaker who spent most of his career working in England, from a Protestant background (although he later converted to Catholicism). Hollar's technical skill has ensured that his prints have always been keenly collected, and comprehensive collections of his work are institutions in London, Berlin and Prague.

John Bastwick (1593-1654) was an English Puritan physician and controversial writer. He left Emmanuel College, Cambridge by left the universiety without a degree. He travelled and served for a time as a soldier, probably in the Dutch army. He then studied medicine abroad, and took the degree of M.D. at Padua. In 1623 he returned to England, and settled in Colchester where he practises as a physician. As a writer he was a Latin stylist and began a career as controversial with Latin works. In 1634 he published in the Netherlands two anti-Catholic Latin treatises 'Elenchus Religionis Papisticae'. In 1637 he produced in English the four parts of his 'Letanie of Dr. John Bastwicke', in which bishops were denounced as the enemies of God and the tail of The Beast; he was summoned before the Star Chamber for his publication. He then was imprisoned until his release was ordered in 1640 by the Long Parliament. In 1642, as the First English Civil War broke out, Bastwick was a captain of the Leicester trained bands, and was taken prisoner by the royalists and sent prisoner to York. Composed by Ambroise Thomas and first performed in 1850, this opera-comique of the same name bears no similarity to Shakespeare's play, though Shakespeare is a character in the play. Falstaff, in the play, is the govenor of Richmond Palace, charged with transporting an intoxicated Shakespeare.

The Mosteiro Santa Maria da Vitoria, a Dominican convent in Batalha. Taking over a century to build, it was completed circa 1517 but was sacked and burned by the troops of Napoleon's General André Massena in 1810-1 during the Peninsular Wars. It is now a UNESCO word heritage site. Engraved by the Swiss engraver Benjamin Rudolph Comte (1760/2-1851) after his compatriot Henri L'Eveque (1769-1832). Both artists spent time working in Portugal.

Portrait of William Bates, half length in an ornamental oval frame on a pedestal, long hair, wearing skull-cap, bands and gown; coat of arms below; frontispiece to his 'Works' (1700). William Bates (1625-1699) was an English Presbyterian minister. In 1660 he acted as one of the commissioners of the Savoy Conference, which sought for reconciliaition within the Church of England. As a nonconformist he was urged to accept the deanery of Lichfield and Coventry, but like Thomas Manton and many others, he declined office. On the accession of William III and Mary, he delivered two speeches to their majesties on behalf of the dissenters, and in his last two years he was pastor of the presbyterian church in Hackney.

Very rare hand-coloured aquatint with etching, 275 x 345mm. 10¾ x 13½". Botanical engraving printed to verso of same leaf. Pin hole to lower right part of image; slight paper tone; else a good impression.

Rare outline etching, image 185 x 265mm. 7¼ x 10½". Lacking margins; some small stains and cluster of pinholes in sky area. Dab of brown paint to one of the figures at left.
North Parade in Bath, Somerset, is a historic terrace built around 1741 by John Wood, the Elder. This composition shows walkers around a lake, a punt on the water and fishing lodge on far bank (right). William Payne (1760 - 1830) was an important watercolour landscape painter, but also a printmaker who published some of his own works. He started as an engineer at Plymouth, Devon.

A satire on a scuffle, between both men and women, that occurred in the Bath Assembly Rooms, between the supporters of the two candidates for the Master of Ceremonies, causing the Riot Act to be read.
