The painting hangs at Windsor Castle with the title Caligula depositing the ashes of his mother and brother in the tomb of his ancestors. "The Most Capital Paintings in England" series of engravings in five volumes, late 1760s-1786, the first three (1769 to 1773) originally published under the title .Sculptura Britannica. These were a critical and financial success for the publisher John Boydell who promoted the interests of both artists, engravers and Patrons establishing a tradition in Britain for collecting prints.

The postman is mobbed at the door by children looking for valentine cards. By George Bernard O'Neill (1828-1917), published in 'Etchings for the Art Union of London by the Etching Club', plate 5. Sentimental paintings of children were extremely popular with Victorian audiences. Critics often dismissed such pictures as intellectually undemanding, yet some of the most important artists of the day took up the subject. The emotion of these pictures centre on a new, 19th century conception of childhood as an innocent, separate state to be shielded and prolonged.

He entered the British Army, and in 1811, as aide-de-camp to Arthur Wellesley, Duke of Wellington, took part in several campaigns in the Peninsular War. He returned to the Netherlands in 1813 when his father became sovereign prince. In 1815, William became crown prince and he took service in the army when Napoleon escaped from Elba. He fought as commander of the Dutch-Belgian forces at the Battle of Quatre Bras (16 June 1815) as well as at Waterloo. He showed personal courage and energy, but frequently displayed atrocious military judgement, leading to many heavy casualties. The Duke of Wellington attributed this to his lack of command experience, however, rather than to him being a bad leader.
