Le Volant Corse Ou Un Joli Joujou Pour Les Alliés. [The Corsican shuttlecock or a pretty plaything for Ye Allies.]
[After George Cruikshank]
[n.d. c.1814]
Scarce etching, 270 x 320mm (10¾ x 12¾"), with large margins
Satire on the final campaign against Napoleon had been characterized by Schwarzenberg's caution and diplomatic hesitation. Blücher (1742-1819) and Schwarzenberg (1771-1820), play badminton, batting a puppet-like Napoleon (1769-1821) back and forth as if he were a shuttlecock. Blücher calls out: “Bravo, Schwartzenberg! Keep the game going! Send him back this way, and—damn him—I’ll drive him off again.” Schwarzenberg replies: “There he goes! Why, Blücher, he used to be quite a heavy plaything—but damn me if he isn’t light as a feather now!” Both wear military uniforms, though Blücher is bareheaded. In the distance lies Paris, shown as a grand city of palaces and spires; three buildings display the double-headed-eagle flag, and one dome flies that flag above the tricolour. Scarce etching, 270 x 330mm (10¾ x 13"), with large margins.
Satire on Napoleon's (1769-1821) defeat by the Allies at the Battle of Leipzig, 1813. A spinning top with Napoleon’s head whirls above the ground while representatives of the Allied powers, Wellington (1769-1852), Schwarzenberg (1771-1820) (or Francis I (1768-1835)), the Tsar (1777-1825), Bernadotte (1763-1844), and Blücher (1742-1819), stand in a circle striking it. Napoleon’s severed limbs lie scattered around, each labeled with the name of a territory from his former empire. To the left, the future King of Holland (1772-1843) raises one of the legs, while in the distance to the right, Napoleon’s (1791-1847) wife and son (1811-32) flee in a carriage. Overhead, a demon carries off a despairing Joseph Bonaparte (1768-1844). Reversed copy of BM 12218A

J Atkinson del.t. R Ackermann's Lithography [n.d., c.1815]
Lithograph, printed area 210 x 300mm (8¼ x 12").
Print made to commemorate the famous capture of two French standards (those of the 45eme and 105eme de la ligne) during the Seventh Coalition's victory in the Battle of Waterloo. It is not known who captured the eagle of the 45eme (the text here only noting it was taken by Scotch Greys), but Corporal F. Stiles was credited with the capture of the 105eme eagle, as recorded here. Stiles was the only officer rewarded for the capture by being made a sergeant and later given and ensigncy, although competing accounts credit another officer, Captain Alexander Clark, with the capture. The eagle standard of the 105eme is now in the collection of the National Army Museum, London. By John Augustus Atkinson (1775 - 1830), painter, draughtsman and printmaker. He spent 1784-1801 in Russia and subsequently made many prints during the Napoleonic Wars. Following the Battle of Waterloo Atkinson actually visited the battlefield as research for a large painting of the battle (exhibited 1817). The duke of Wellington was one of Atkinson's patrons.

Lithograph. Sheet 444 x 596mm (17½ x 23½"), with large margins.
Napoleon and Josephine visiting the studio of David. There was great fanfare when David announced the completion of his picture. The royal couple, accompanied by a large entourage from the court, made a special visit to the artist's studio to see the work on 4 January 1808. It was an official display of royal patronage with music and a cavalry escort for the parade of carriages. Pleased with David's work and overwhelmed by the realism of the enormous canvas, Napoleon exclaimed, "What truth! This is not a painting, I can walk in it!" Surrounded by his court and all those assembled, the emperor continued: "Well done, David, very well done! You have correctly guessed my own intention in representing me as a French knight [chevalier français]. I am grateful to you for having given future generations proof of my affection for the woman with whom I share the burdens of government." Published in A.V. Bonaparte's Monkey. The above is a faithful portrait of a monkey belonging to Bonaparte during his residence at Longwood House, St. Helena. After Bonaparte’s death it was purchased by Captain Thompson, of the Abundance, and given by him, on his return to Spithead, to Mr. Stephen Taylor, the artist, then residing at Winchester. The monkey was very mischievous, and upon one occasion, made his way into a dressing closet, broke a glass, opened the dressing case, and was viewing himself in the looking glass, when discovered by Mr. Taylor, who made a sketch at the time, from which he afterwards painted a fine picture, and from which this print is taken. The monkey died after being in Mr. Taylor’s possession two years, and was buried in his garden at Winchester.

An allegory of the choices of life: children stream from between the legs of a woman in the foreground to pass through an arch to live their lives, with the middle ground filled with people partying and brawling. On the left others are being tortured in a cave, a gallows above; on the right is a burning church. Far fewer people pass a narrower arch and join a steep path up to Heaven. Fine hand-coloured etching. 260 x 360mm (10¼ x 14¼"). Trimmed to plate.
Satire on the cost of John Nash's reconstruction of Buckingham House (now Palace) with perhaps the only contemporary printed likeness of the architect. Nash stands between the two wings of the house, confronted by John Bull who scrutinises a scroll on which the word 'Commission' is many times repeated. By this time more than double the original estimate had already been spent and an alteration to the wings had cost £50,000 (both issues alluded to in the speech between Nash and John Bull). Nash admitted that he had profited by exchanging his salary for a percentage commission on expenditure (hence the scroll). During 1829 a thousand men were toiling to finish the Palace by the King's birthday (August 12) in 1830, making the publication of this print particularly timely. BM Satires: 15794.
