Coloured aquatint. Sheet 230 x 140mm (9 x 5½"). Slightly time stained.
Portrait of Neapope, a spiritual leader of the Sauk tribe and advisor to Black (Sparrow) Hawk (1767-1838), during the 'Black Hawk War' of 1832. The 'British Band' (a nickname given to the Sauk for helping the British in the War of 1812) crossed the Mississippi into Illinois, attempting to resettle land ceded in 1804 to the United States in a disputed treaty. It was the US that started hostilities, when poorly-trained militia opened fire on a delegation from the Sauk, after which the tribe attacked forts and settlements before being defeated at the Battles of Wisconsin Heights & Bad Axe. Most of the Sauk were killed, but Neapope and Black Hawk were captured and imprisoned. The 'Black Hawk War' is best known for Abraham Lincoln's brief military experience and as the impetus for the 'Indian Removal' policy. A reduced version of the portrait by George Catlin, published in 'Dr.Prichard's Natural History of Man'.

Engraving and etching. 400 x 545mm (15¾ x 21½"), with large margins. Creasing and marking in top margin. Repaired tear in top margin.
Sculpture of a naiad, reclining on a lion skin while a young winged cupid plays the lyre at her feet, seen from behind. Embedded in the naiad's rocky couch is an over turned jar, from which flows a spring of water; while Canova (1757-1822) was content to call his subject a nymph, his friend and biographer Leopoldo Cicognara more accurately calls her a naiad, a type of nymph that presides in fresh water, prompted by the carved detail of flowing water. Antonio Canova's original sculpture, commissioned by Lord Cawdor in 1814, is a variant of Guido Reni's painting 'Venus reclining with Cupid' (c.1639); the sculpture is currently part of the Royal Collection at Buckingham Palace. From the Berkeley Collection, Spetchley Park.

A satirical broadside which comments on Robert Walpole's reluctance to go to war in the 1730s. It is a print of a medal struck during the rule of Oliver Cromwell which commented on France and Spain's subservience to him, however in this print Cardinal Fleury of France replaces Cromwell and the Dutch ambassador and Walpole replace the Spanish and the French ambassadors. Fleurey, resting his head in the lap of Britannia presents his bare behind while Walpole and the Dutch Ambassador debate who has to kiss it first. BM Satire 2147.

He then took his crust of bread out of his wallet again, as if to eat it; held it some time in his hand,--then laid it upon the bit of his ass's bridle,--looked wistfully at the little arrangement he had made--and then gave a sigh."
