Satire on the imminent 'birth' of the Catholic Emancipation Bill, published just days before the Bill was introduced/delivered. At the centre of the image are Wellington (holding 'Ministerial Forceps'), Peel (with a bottle of medicine), and an old woman, as doctor-accoucheur, apothecary, and nurse. The nurse sits with a copy of The Times, which had urged concessions to the Catholics and was styled 'the hireling of Popery' by opponents of the Bill. Three winds of 'Faction' blow from above, issuing from the heads of Eldon (chief opponent of Emancipation), Winchelsea (included in reference to his extravagant speches) and a third. Figures around the edges include two frenzied bishops, two non-Anglican ministers (of which one is evidently Irving), O'Connell in wig and gown stood addressing a band of his followers, and Cumberland top right, in hussar uniform. The Sheik of Governor of Mosambique visits de Gama on board his Ship.
Vol. VIII.p.32. [n.d., c.1775.]
Etching, sheet 140 x 85mm. 5½ x 3¼". Trimmed within plate.
Dom Vasco da Gama, 1st Count of Vidigueira (1460 or 1469 – 1524) was a Portuguese explorer and the commander of the first ships to sail directly from Europe to India. The expedition set sail for his first voyage from Lisbon on July 8, 1497, following the route pioneered by earlier explorers along the coast of Africa via Tenerife and the Cape Verde Islands. After reaching the coast of present day Sierra Leone, Gama took a course south into the open ocean, crossing the Equator and seeking the South Atlantic westerlies that Bartolomeu Dias had discovered in 1487. This course proved successful and on November 4, 1497, the expedition made landfall on the African coast. Arab-controlled territory on the East African coast was an integral part of the network of trade in the Indian Ocean. Fearing the local population would be hostile to Christians, Gama impersonated a Muslim and gained audience with the Sultan of Mozambique. With the paltry trade goods he had to offer, Gama was unable to provide a suitable gift to the ruler and soon the local populace became suspicious of Gama and his men. Forced by a hostile crowd to flee Mozambique, Gama departed the harbor, firing his cannons into the city in retaliation. [Oxford Mag. Feb. 1769.]
Etching with letterpress, 18th century watermark, sheet 315 x 205mm (12½ x 8¼"). Creased where previously folded. Some time staining.
Satire from the Oxford Magazine 1769 concerning the clash of political interest between Thomas Harley (1730-1804) and William Beckford (1709-70), both MPs for the City of London. Standing on the left, Beckford, dressed in a mayor's robe, facing Harley and saying “Receive Instruction & not Silver” he holds a paper lettered “They have a Right to give us Instructions”. Harley, a Merchant Taylor, holds a tailor’s goose, a soldier’s coat and shears, and responds “Teach us our Lesson! Are we then School Boys? Rather cut asunder my Thread of Life”. The figures are enclosed by a frame with pillars surmounted by the heads of putti. On the side by Beckford is a small English rose; on Harley’s side is a Scottish thistle to indicate his support for Bute. Below that are instructions given to Sir Robert Ladbroke (1713-73), Beckford, Harley and Barlow Trecothick (1718-75) Representatives of the City of London: By their Constituents. And two columns of fourteen articles largely designed to oppose current government policy and alleged practices. These are signed Charles Clavey (fl. 1769) Chairman of the Common Hall. Guildhall, Feb. 10, 1769. On 10th February 1769, the Common Council of the City of London met, elected Clavier as leader, and drew up these instructions for members of Parliament. Harley is said to have received a lucrative uniform commission as a reward for his role in quelling anti-government riots in the city during his tenure as mayor in 1767-68. Beckford was an ardent supporter of William Pitt, Lord Chatham, against the Duke of Grafton's government; he was mayor in 1762-63 and would become mayor again in 1769-70. BM Satires 4269.

One of many satires on Admiral John Byng's failure to prevent the French from taking Port Mahon in the Battle of Minorca (1756). Byng is on the right, a broken sword at his feet and a 'Gib-Halter' around his neck (Byng was court martialled and executed by firing squad on 14 March 1757). On the left a Frenchman points to Mahon, referring to it as 'Port my-own'. In the centre is Admiral Edward Hawke who replaced Byng (who was brought back to England under arrest following the loss). Despite his own best efforts, however, Hawke could not recover the island, and returned to England, unsuccessful, at the start of 1757.
