Publish'd as the Act directs 6th March 1772. by I.Bretherton No.134 New Bond Street.
Etching. 245 x 180mm (9¾ x 7"). Small margins. Light foxing. Trimmed to plate mark on bottom.
French coachman holding his whip and taking snuff. Etched by Henry Bunbury, an amateur printmaker who subsequently enjoyed a successful career as a designer for printsellers. 'Prints by Bunbury an his imitators were conspicuously 'polite' and appealed, like novels, 'To the Fashionable World and Polite circles'. Of good family, amply endowed with social skills, a beautiful wife and connections in high society, Bunbury's appeal was not solely aesthetic' and his admirers 'recognized his comic talent, his informed enthusiasm for literature, and his ability to draw a momentary pang with something of the sensitivity with which Sterne could write it' (Clayton). Two sheets of letterpress. A very rare souvenir of revolution leaflets (2) , 57 x 240mm. 2¼ x 9½". [&] 420 x 256mm. 16½ x 10".
In 1848 King Ferdinand II of the Two Sicilies was forced to grant a constitution patterned on the French Charter of 1830, advocating the removal of royal power to instigate legislation, and to concern themselves only with the application of laws. In March 1848, granted by Ferdinand II, Naples was flooded with leaflets printed in which people could freely express their thoughts on men and events of that period. One of these particular leaflets focused on two famous men: Monsignor Celestino Cocle of San Giovanni Rotondo, confessor and confidant of the royal family, and Francesco Saverio Del Carretto, Minister of Police. Monsignor Celestino Cocle (1783-1857) was Superior General of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer. He held the position as Governor and Consultor General for King Ferdinand II. Francesco Saverio del Carretto (1777-1861) was a minister of police for King Ferdinand II, but following the start of the Revolution in 1848, he saw no other choice than to escape, and he fled to France.

Caricature of John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich (1718 - 1792), First Lord of the Admiralty. He stands directed to the right, his head in profile, his left hand thrust into his waistcoat, his right in his waistcoat pocket. Montagu instituted reforms in naval dockyards with Anson, but was later blamed for the rundown at the time of the American War of Independence. He was known as 'Jemmy Twitcher' for his part in the prosecution of his friend Wilkes. The Sandwich Islands were named after him. The subject of innumerable caricatures and lampoons, his most lasting contribution to British culture is his invention of the now-familiar snack - the sandwich. By James Sayers (1748 - 1823). Sayers's caricatures were so powerful and direct in their purpose that Fox is said to have declared that they did him more harm than all the attacks made on him in parliament or the press. Portrait of John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich (1718 - 1792), British statesman who succeeded his grandfather Edward Montagu, 3rd Earl of Sandwich as the Earl of Sandwich in 1729, at the age of ten. He held various military and political offices, including Postmaster General, First Lord of the Admiralty, and Secretary of State for the Northern Department. Montagu was also a sportsman who enjoyed cricket, tennis, fishing, and yachting. Furthermore he is also known for the claim that he was the inventor of the sandwich. The Sandwich Islands (Hawaii) were named after him. Sandwich was keen on cricket. The earliest surviving record of his involvement in the sport comes from 1741 when, as the patron and captain of the Huntingdonshire county team, Sandwich and Halifax formed the Northamptonshire & Huntingdonshire team which twice defeated Bedfordshire, first at Woburn Park and then at Cow Meadow, Northampton. Etching. 175 x 110mm (7 x 4¼"), on wove paper, with very large margins. Ink number top right of plate.
The publisher Charles Bretherton (c.1760 fl - 1783) was the younger brother of James Bretherton. BM Satires 6076.
