Front, Side View, And Back Front, of a Modern fine Gentleman.
Design'd by H.W. Bunbury Esq.r.

Stipple, sheet 225 x 260mm (8¾ x 10¼"). Trimmed, losing publication line. Foxing.
Three views of a slim and foppish young man demonstrating the fashion of the day. Caricature by Henry Bunbury, an amateur printmaker who subsequently enjoyed a successful career as a designer for printsellers. 'Prints by Bunbury an his imitators were conspicuously 'polite' and appealed, like novels, 'To the Fashionable World and Polite circles'. Of good family, amply endowed with social skills, a beautiful wife and connections in high society, Bunbury's appeal was not solely aesthetic' and his admirers 'recognized his comic talent, his informed enthusiasm for literature, and his ability to draw a momentary pang with something of the sensitivity with which Sterne could write it' (Tim Clayton).

[after Isaac Cruikshank]
[n.d. c.1806]
Hand couloured etching, sheet 170 x 220mm (6¾ x 8¾"). Trimmed within plate and glued to backing sheet. Folds as issued.
A reduced version of the print made by Isaac Cruikshank and published by SW Fores. George III sits at a small oblong table making punch in a bowl decorated with a crown. Decanters containing heads stand on a side-table.. By the punch-bowl is a sugar-loaf with the head of Grenville, looking sideways at the bowl. A lemon with the profile of Tierney lies on the table. The King holds the ladle in his right hand, turning to the side-table to take up an orange with the features of Fox. He says: "Tho the Ingredient taken seperatly, may not be pleasing to every Palate yet when mixed together may go down with a tolerable relish." The three labelled decanters in the front row contain the heads of Sheridan 'Brandy', of Ellenborough in a judge's wig 'Water', and of Windham 'Rum'. Behind the orange is a bottle of 'Arrack' containing possibly the head of Fitzwilliam. On the left stands Erskine in Chancellor's wig and gown, holding the Purse of the Great Seal. He sips a glass of the punch, saying, "I dont think it is strong enough, this Arrack is very enticing stuff, I like the taste of the Orange, it makes the Punch pleasing, better without the lemmon there I think John Bull will like it now."

A pioneer of protestant missionary activity among the Tswana of southern Africa under the aegis of the London Missionary Society (LMS) and the first transcriber of seTswana, Moffat had an important influence in Africa between 1817 and 1870. He helped to open the ‘missionary road’ from the Cape north-eastward, which was important in southern African imperial politics. He also helped to shape British conceptions of southern Africa before the South African War, extolling British imperial rule, criticizing Afrikaners (Boers), and portraying Africans as in need of Christianity and civilization. Mezzotint on india, proof before all letters. Platemark: 775 x 495mm. (30½ x 19½"). Large repaired tear from bottom edge to map on floor; second repaired tear to upper left margin.
Mohammed Ali, in the Palace of the Citadel, Cairo with 'Barrace of Nil' and 'Plans of Railway, From Cairo to Suez' by his feet. Muhammad Ali Pasha (1769-1849) is regarded as the founder of modern Egypt. Although neither born in Egypt nor a speaker of Arabic, he can readily be identified as someone who strove to defend the country against outsiders, to build up its power and to develop its economic and administrative resources. The dynasty that he established would rule Egypt and Sudan until the Egyptian Revolution of 1952. In 1833 he considered building a railway between Suez and Cairo to improve transit between Europe and India as he proved to boost Egypt's economy with exports of cotton and Egyptian goods. After his death, Abbas I contracted Robert Stephenson to build Egpyt's first standard gauge railway. Thomas Brigstocke (1809-1881), was a British portrait painter. He first studied in Sass's studio, then in the Royal Academy Schools, and under H.P. Briggs, and subsequently under J.P. Kni-lit. He also studied at Paris, Florence, Rome and Naples, during eight years. He exhibited his first picture, 'Alnaschar, the Barber's fifth Brother', at the Royal Academy in 1842. Five years later he went to Egypt with a letter of introduction to Mohammed Ali Pasha, by whom he was kindly received, and well employed in painting portraits of himself and his family. There Brigstocke spent sixteen months painting chiefly at the Palace of Shoubra, on the Nile, near Cairo, and at Ras el Tin, Alexandria; where Mohammed Ali established the first Egpytian navy.

Portrait of Mohammed ben Hadou, ambassador to Charles II from the court of Moulay Ismail Ben Sharif, in England 1681-2, negotiating a treaty at a time that English-occupied Tangier (a dowry gift from Portugal to Charles II) was under siege by the Moroccans. John Evelyn wrote that he had an English mother and to be 'a handsome person, well featured and of a wise look, subtile and extremely civile'. He was also said to have married an English servant during his stay. The treaty that he negotiated was never ratified. In 1684 the English forces left Tangier, having destroyed the fortifications. This seated portrait was painted by Susannah-Penelope Rosse (1652-1700), daughter of Richard Gibson and close friend of Samuel Cooper. Another painting shows ben Hadou riding in Hyde Park in full Ottoman attire.
