Set of the Twelve Months after the paintings by Joachim von Sandrart for the Old Palace Schleissheim, Munich, 1642-3). Each has a person engaged in a seasonal activity and a zodiac sign somewhere in the composition. Underneath each is a Latin verse by C. Barlaeus. The engravers were: Jeremias Falck, Jonas Suyderhoef, Reinier van Persijn, Cornelius van Delan II, Albert Haelwegh and Theodor Matham. Two extra plates of this series relating to Time, Night & Day, are not present.

Angelo Maria Monticelli (c.1712-?1758), Italian castrato soprano holding music reading 'ma non lo posso dir' ('but I cannot say it'). In a career also taking in Vienna, Dresden and various Italian cities, Monticelli was in London 1741-6, where he was praised by Horace Walpole, Charles Burney and others. Engraved after a portrait by Cavaliere Andrea Casali (1705-84), Italian painter and dealer active in England.

From 'Recueil des Costumes de Tours les Ouvrages Dramatiques représentés avec succès sur les grands théâtres de Paris.' Each issue contained 5 to 20 plates, lithographed by G. Engelmann after A. Garneray, A. Vizentini, A. Faure, H. Lecomte, Leprince, Albert, Fauconnier, Grandville, etc., depicting actors in costumes from plays, operas and ballets for the years 1819-1825.

Blaise de Lasseran-Massencôme, seigneur de Montluc (c.1502-77), marshal of France. Montluc famously defended Siena in 1555 and held Guyenne for the king during the French Religious Wars. He is most famous, however, for his book of memoirs, the 'Commentaires de Messire Blaise de Montluc' (1592), which have been described as a 'soldier's bible'. From 'Les Portraits des Hommes Illustres Francois qui sont Peints dans la Galerie du Palais Cardinal de Richelieu' (1660). The book reproduces the portraits of great men hanging in Richelieu's 'Galerie des hommes illustres' by Simon Vouet and Philippe de Champaigne (although only four of the original paintings survive). The final 'illustrious figure' was Richelieu himself.

Charlotte Marguerite de Montmorency (1594-1650) married Henri de Bourbon, Prince de Condé aged 15, on the orders of the elderly Henry IV who wanted her on hand as a mistress. However the newly-weds fled to Brussels to thwart the ploy, only returning after the king's death.

Henri de Montmorency (1534-1614), Marshal of France, Constable of France, governor of Languedoc from 1563 until his death, Duke of Montmorency from 1579. He sided with the Protestants during the French Religious Wars. He is shown in ornate armour within an alcove with superb architectural details, a strap-work cartouche for a title left blank. On the reverse is a German-text biography relating to another portrait, within an ornate woodcut frame. Published in Jacob Schrenck von Notzing's 'Der aller Durchleuchtigisten und Grossmächtigen Kayser, Durchleuchtigisten unnd Großmächtigen Königen'.

In the 1880s, the Montreal Amateur Atheletic Association organised the famous annual Montreal Winter Carnival, which featured a temporary 'ice castle', which would be stormed in a mock attack.

A view of a grand ice castle topped with eight flags one dramatically printed outside the main image. The palace is surrounded by people on horse drawn sleighs. The the Montreal Winter Carnival was designed to entice tourists to Quebec in Winter. From 1883 to 1889, five such carnivals were organized. The Ice Palace was a fundamental part of the carnivals. The ice palaces of 1883, 1884, 1885, 1887, and probably 1889 were designed by leading architect Alexander Cowper Hutchinson and built at least in 1883 by his brother J.H. Hutchinson.

An old fortress on the outskirts of Paris. Amelia Long (née Hume) (1772-1837), married Charles Long who was created Baron Farnborough in 1826. Lady Farnborough was Girtin's favourite pupil, and her work was widely admired by professional artists and drawing masters.

A long bridge is seen in the distance. The town of Montrose traded in skins, hides and cured salmon, and in the 17th century began to export wheat and barley in regular trading transactions. From William Daniell's 'A Voyage Round Great Britain', a series of 308 aquatints published in eight volumes between 1814-1825, described by R.V. Tooley as 'the most important colour plate book on British Topography'.

Beal, the elder brother of the artist Gifford Beal, worked and lived in New York where he was a member of various artistic societies including the Salmagundi Club, Lotus Club, the National Academy of Design, the American Water Color Society and the Society of American Engravers. The plate is dedicated to American journalist and writer Robert H. ''Bob'' Davis (1869-1942).

A view of the Monument to the Great Fire of London. Thomas Malton (1748 - 1804) was an architectural watercolourist and teacher of Thomas Girtin and Joseph Mallord William Turner; also an aquatinter, notably after his own designs of London views.

The west side of the Monument to the Great Fire of London of 1666, designed by Christopher Wren and Robert Hooke. The base holds a sculpture, by Caius Gabriel Cibber, in alto and bas relief, representing the destruction of the City; with Charles II and his brother, James, the Duke of York, surrounded by Liberty, Architecture, and Science, giving directions for its restoration. Constructed between 1671-1677 the monument is the tallest free-standing stone column in the world. Wren & Hooke designed the column to be of scientific use: they intended the central shaft to be used with a zenith telescope; and each step is exactly 6 inches, allowing barometric preassure to be measured at known heights.
