Very scarce hand-coloured lithograph. Sheet: 610 x 540mm (24 x 21¼"). Slight mount burn. Repaired vertical tear from top edge to centre.
A large fashion plate showing the various fashions in men's and boy's clothing at the end of 1831. The plate is divided into two halves, the bottom showing outer and domestic urban wear while the top shows formal wear and country sportswear. The functional sportswear devleoped in England for the country gentleman, as shown in the top right corner, used wool which could be easily tailored. This new form of tailcoat crossed the divide between urban and country fashion due to its functionality and style. It is at this stage that styles from London start to challenge Paris' leadership and Mayfair becomes the heart of men's fashion.

A boy sits on a rock mending a net. In the background are three more fishermen, one of whom carries a net. After Richard Westall RA (1765-1836). A versatile artist, Westall became a full RA in 1794, and in the 1790s worked for both Boydell's Shakespeare Gallery and Fuseli's Milton Gallery. He later illustrated the works of Milton, Byron, Walter Scott and many other leading writers. The high point of Westall's career came in 1814 when he exhibited 312 of his pictures in a successful exhibition in Pall Mall, but from 1815 his fortunes declined and he died in penury.

An image of two bare-knuckle boxers in a ring (marked H for Richard Humphries and M for Daniel Mendoza) with their seconds, one of four bouts between the pair between 1787 and 1790. The title refers to Mendoza's book on the science of boxing, from the 1792 O'Leary publication of The Art of Boxing, by Daniel Mendoza. Mendoza (1765-1836) was born in Whitechapel of Sephardic Jewish parents. Pierce Egan, the author of Boxiana, wrote "No pugilist whatever, since the time of Broughton (or even Broughton himself), has ever so completely elucidated, or promulgated, the principles of boxing as Daniel Mendoza".

Menelik was a well respected ruler on many fronts, most notably for his coordination of the successful military campaign against the Kingdom of Italy in the first Italo-Ethiopian war, as well as his commitment to modernising the Ethiopian empire and his caring attitude towards the poor.

Menen (in French 'Menin') is situated in the West Flanders province of south west Belgium, on the Leie River near the French border (the city was part of France between 1668 and 1713). There were as many as 22 sieges between 1579 and 1830. Vauban, the French military engineer who revolutionized fortification and siege strategies during the reign of Louis XIV, turned Menen into a model-fortification (1679-1689). The city was besieged and taken by the duke of Marlborough's allied Army in august 1706, hence the English names amoung the list of commanders. Edme Mentelle (1730-1815), a French geographer, historian and cartographer, a professor at the École Normale. With Conrad Malt-Brun he produced the 'Géographie mathématique, physique et politique de toutes les parties du monde' (6 vols., published between 1803 and 1812). Cape Mentelle in south-west Australia was named after him by Nicolas Baudin. The portrait was published in 'Allgemeine Geographische Ephemeriden' (Universal Geographical Ephemerides (i.e. encyclopedia)) by Friedrich Bertuch et al.
